Laura von Bertouch bows out on a high
She has just been crowned a netball world champion, but talented Australian mid-court player Laura von Bertouch has today announced her retirement from all levels of the game.
At just 27 years of age, von Bertouch has become a pivotal cog for the Australian Netball Team since making her debut in July 2006.
However, after committing herself fully to the sport since the age of 8, she believes the time is now right to pursue other opportunities.
“I made the decision during the season to retire from both my national and Adelaide Thunderbirds commitments,” von Bertouch explained.
“Simply put, I am just burnt out. It takes a big commitment to succeed at this level with the travel, training and discipline required.
“Since starting the game, I have committed myself 100 percent and it is now time for other experiences in my life.
“I am extremely lucky to go out on a high, winning the World Championships. It was an achievement I will never forget and something I shared with an amazing group of people, including my sister Natalie.”
Australian coach Norma Plummer is sad to see her skilled wing attack leaving the game at the peak of her career, but fully supports von Bertouch’s decision.
“She has just played the best game of her life in the World Championship final, and probably still has four years in her,” Plummer said.
“But I understand there are other things in life and Laura gives her absolute all when she commits to something.
“She was a delight to coach, she took everything on board and left nothing undone. Everything she does is with quality. I wish her all the best in the future.”

Well done Laura on a innings well played...
Just a pity that the netballers do not get the financial
help that other elite sports people get...

Oh well, at least Mal will be happy - after these final pics from today, we'll see less of her.

Only 27!
I know they don't get the financial rewards that other sports do, but their profile as netballers allows them other opportunities that the average joe like you and I don't get.

I believe Laura will be back at some stage, she said she's just burnt out and needs a break from it all. I think at 27 she still has a lot to offer the Thunderbirds and Australia. She is a brilliant player and as far as I'm concerned, can appear in the paper all she likes.
