Good luck at Browns, when the Salmon are firing its one of the best places to fish, have fun walking that sand

Heard the sand is tough. Look forward to some exercise until it actually starts    . If the Sambos are there it will be all worth it. Will get two days in around Corny Point with Berry Bay a target as well, cracking beach that one. Flatties in the shallows more towards Corny Point this time of year as well. Hope the weather breaks.

Definitely lessens the pain. ;) The sand is a bit of a slog, but scaling 'Heartbreak Hill' in the home stretch is the real ba$tard.

Should be some decent salmon schools around The Foot now. Big, late-arvo high tides at Browns would be the go. Dust Hole & Gyms also worth a look. 8)

Must be talking about the same place, we have always called it Dust Bowl....the place I am talking about is a surfing beach and its to the left of Browns Beach on a narrow track. Younger days we use to have lures on hang off the back of the boards catching salmon as were were surfing. First went there as a kid about 30 years ago.

Any of you lads been across to Scotts Bay?. Was there last October (and have been there many times) and saw the biggest school of salmon I have ever seen. It would have been 400 metres long and about 60 metres across, it was amazing. I will try and find the photos we took.

What type & size metal? I've had good results on bigger fish using the 65gm Gillies slug in pillie colour. They love 'em. :D

I did a big of digging to see what weight a fish that size would be, and found this on the PIRSA website..

when they are around 70cm in length and 5kg in weight

So your fish would've been around the 11-12lb mark. Nice. 8)

This fish went 70cm (with a tail-fold.. :p), taken a few years ago from the Browns inner reef on a 50gm Halco slug with the red holographic strip.

Had a chat to the lads at Cavan today and apparently the Dust Bowl is one of the next beaches to the South of Berry Bay. Afternoon high tides are just a week away which will be awesome timing. There are peak feeding times around 2 hours before the high tide if you get The Anglers Almanac you will know what im talking about. As we know there are no counting your chickens too early but im EXCITED. :D .

Nice fish Herder, great to catch on lures.
Popped the hooks on a 4kg Sambo or damm close to it at Locks at Easter when it was on the sand. What a scramble to try and get it above the wash line, as we all know with Locks there is no such thing as a wash line even when you think your safe. Yep, up came a smallish wash but enough to give this mongrel enough water to flicker through. I did the best belly flop ever with my 2 boys watching on and about 5 other people only to have the F****R slither from under me and back to safety. It was 7am and the sun was yet to appear over the hill to dry me out i was freezing.
I carried on. I caught none and my boys got 2 each. Well worth it when you get to watch ya lads battle 2kg to 3kg fish when they are only 12 and 14.

That sucks Best on Hill.

I went on a charter 2 saturdays ago now. I tried to upload the photos but they wouldnt work?
Anyway we got 70 whiting, some big ones but most just above legal, 13 ruggers and 7 big snapper.
They werent as big as last years, biggest being around 7-8kgs but still good sizes.
Wasnt the best day for me on the boat, we had a massive night at the pub the night before which resulted in me burleying up quite a few times for the day, still didnt stop me from catching the biggest snapper and my fair share of the whiting ;)

I would reccomend if ya looking to go on a charter to give Double header out of Pt Broughton a shot, Trev the captain isnt the happiest character but he has made sure both years now that we came home with a shit load of fish which is what its all about!

its funny because when you ring up ya mates to see if they want to go fishing they all make themself available  but when you ring them up to help get rid of a busted freezer and its contents thats a different story  but in saying that one good mate gave me a hand, thanks "cockle" he knows who he is  my shout tonight :drinkers:

 Accidentally left one of my freezer doors slightly ajar a few months ago, and didn't notice until things started smelling a bit like you experienced. Unfortunately it wasn't my bait freezer, so I lost a few whole pannies & a few packs of whiting. :( Luckily the ice that built up at the back of the freezer kept some of the fish fully frozen, so the damage was limited. Just a good excuse to go out and replish a few meals. :D

6mths ago I went to a mate's shack in Ardrossan and the bait freezer had died, and nobody had been to the shack for 4-5wks. Man, that was rank! Wouldn't have liked to have been the garbo that collected that bin...

Another mate has a shack down at Pt Vic and his bait freezer died and it'd been about 3wks since he last went there. He lost a significant number of cockles, collected over several trips to Goolwa & fair to say if he'd purchase the same quantity over the counter at a tackle store, he would've broken down in tears.. :(

Nothing like the waft of deceased marine life...

The boat is packed. Bait, food, tackle, grog. 2 days, 2 nights in the Aspley Strait, the stretch of water between Bathurst and Melville Islands. Hopefully plenty of Golden Snapper, Threadfin Salmon, Cod, Sharks and the odd Mangrove Jack, Jewie and Barra. Put up a small report Sunday arvo.

Left Friday morning, got back Sunday morning. Headed up the Aspley Strait to a community (Pularumpi) at Garden Point to get fuel. $2.30 a lt. Beggars can't be choosers. The people are heaps friendly, so much so, I've decided I'm going over for the Tiwi Island GF next year.

Headed back down a river to drop some mud crab pots in, and found a little creek that looked fishy. Thought having a troll would be the go as I'm good at that, and my mate hooked a Threadfin. Next run he got a Barracouta. Then it was my turn. Hooked something I couldn't stop, even with the drag up tight, so I slammed my thumb on the real. It stopped it, but only after there was smoke coming off my indicator. Turned out to be a giant Sleepy Cod. ;) . Another run, and I got a smaller cod.

Met up with the other boat, who had just had 2 encounters with crocs attacking their muddie pots while pulling them in. They hadn't caught a fish yet so we said troll up one side of the creek, and we will do the other. 50 meters in and WHAM, I hooked up and thought this feels alright. Then a sight I'd been dreaming of. A big Barra tail walked thrashing it's head side to side. It ran into the snags, came back out, did a couple more leaps, came to the boat dove back down, up, down, then finally netted it. 82cm of dream fish. I thought I'd done some exciting fishing in my time, but that catch easily took the cake. After that I didn't really care what happened.

Caught some small trevally, heap of sharks and mud crabs. Didn't see a croc the whole trip. Did the run back at 1 AM Sunday. For those that don't know, it's about 70 km from the mouth of Aspley to Darwin.

I have only put my boat in the water once since I've been in Darwin (slack I know), but I think it's time to go exploring.

Cheers for the report mate, sounds awesome! 8) Congrats on landing your 'dream fish'! ;) Look forward to hearing about a few of your future Top End adventures. 8)

I got out locally on Saturday and struggled to find whiting or squid around my usual haunts, so I bit the bullet and headed to an untried location, sounded around, found some interesting structure and dropped the pick. Ended up with 18 legal KG's (at least 2 bags of just unders thrown back) and 6 squid. Also found a few likely spots en route to said new location. Got drenched at about 4pm & made a run for the ramp. Good result in the end after looking like lean pickings early on. ;)

Always a good feeling when you find some new grounds. Got a couple of marks out from St Kilda that produce bag limits of snook and squid.
