Tuesday 18 march
Well what can I say .I almost climbed back in the car and drove home with the wind .
I decided to walk to my Salmon Beach and have a try anyway .Its not that bad in a wind when you wade as long as you can turn your back to it .So thats exactly what I did . It was a lot colder than yesterday.

Fourth cast on this beach and I am stripping the line back .Tap tap I stop the taps stop and tap its on . And I managed to land this SMALL
BreamImage

I continued on my way up the beach with not much action .At one spot I waded out and a school of baitfish hit my legs and a fish of a nice size jumped out the water .I cast at the area but nothing had a go at my fly.
Wandered off to have a sit down and a drink of water .Noticed a guy further up the beach .After a nice chat and a few casts i headed back towards my car and the next beach.

A few minutes aftera strong small grab .and a very very tiny Bream took my fly
Image

About ten minutes after this fish the wind was pushing my casts in towards the seaweed bank near the shore .I was standing thinking I am about to go home .When a very big strike took my green fly I could feel the fish was a nice size .It was trying to run and I was trying to guide it back to shore .When snap my mono broke lost fish and fly .

So with a very quick mind change I re rigged some mono put on a red/pink fly and out I cast. Just one big grab and nothing .And at this stage I decided to go home the wind was getting to hard to cast with ,and I didn't want anymore lost flies.

And with that almost three hours had passed not huge fish but fish landed and bigger fish lost .
cheers

April 6
Well what can I say its been an awfully long time between drinks so to speak .
I thought today I am going to try one spot in the port river that I drive past most days .Well when I arrived the wind was blowing in my face so I headed to a beach at West Lakes .
What can I say I walked /waded that beach for 1 1/2 hours with out a touch nudge bite take .The only fish I saw were tiny bait fish and they were only being taken by birds from above.
So I decided to dry my waders off and cast the shore .Now I am really ashamed to admit this I dropped my green and yellow fly in the water.I didn't have any fly line threw the last rung on my rod .The fly was just sitting in the water I was just pulling my fly line .When I noticed the school of tiny bream around my fly .Bang one and off bang two on and off .I was standing there laughing at them and enjoying them thinking this fly does work .Bang I am on and this tiddler on the bank .Not what I was after size wise but it was something to show for my morning . ::)
Image
After this little fish one of around 20cms took my fly but spat it straight away .I then changed to a pink fly that got interest from some bigger fish but they wouldn't take it.
So I cut my losses and took my wind burn home ;D

Had a donut day Sunday dropping 3 fish .
I had decided seeing this is my last week of leave I would hit some different beaches .
I hit a small beach at the southern end of WEST LAKES today there were no other fishers around and the water was still .At different times Mulloway were jumping towards the centre of the lake .Fish wise for me one tiny bream jumped out of the water to attack the last fly I tried a black fly with a rubber band head .
BUT what kept me there for over 2 hours you may well ask!!!! The same thing that was hitting my flies FUNNY earlier in my holidays and this time I caught a glimpse.
Well I did hook 6 of these things and lost them all 3 were 30cms or above and 3 were smaller .
I can not explain what it feels like to feel and land a fish on a fly you have tied .And I certainly can not explain the feeling of watching SQUID of 30cms or above taking my flies .
I lost three squid on my GREEN fly
I lost one squid on a red pink and black fly .I changed this one as I didn't like the way it was turning on its back .Didn't stop the squid .
I lost 2 and maybe the largest on a black fly part way through it became overcast and dark and I swapped to a black fly .
Did almost land the largest got it past where I was wading before it spat the fly.
Donut day today but went home with a smile .
I couldn't understand why no one else was fishing

cheers
different beach tomorrow

Angler catches heavyweight carp
John Bird with Two Tone

After taking a photograph, Mr Bird released Two Tone back into the lake

An angler in east Kent has landed a 67lb carp after trying to catch it for eight years.

John Bird, 26, hauled in the huge fish at Connington Lake in his hometown of Ashford, at 0200 BST on Sunday.

If the British Record Fish Committee verify the catch, it will break its current record for the biggest freshwater fish landed in the UK.

Mr Bird released the gigantic carp, affectionately known to anglers as Two Tone, after taking a photograph.

He described catching Two Tone as a very emotional moment.

'Even larger'

"It was 2.30am when the bite alarm went off. Some 15 minutes later the fish was safely in the net. I only realised it was the record fish when I saw the colouring of its fins.

"I have had so many calls I had to turn my phone off at work, but it has been really great and I have been touched by all the messages of congratulations, " he added.

Two Tone, who was brought to Connington Lake in the late 80s by Mid Kent Fisheries, has been caught before at a slightly lighter weight.

Chris Logsdon, manager of Mid Kent Fisheries, said they expected him to grow even larger.

"This carp has been growing and growing over the last 20 years, and we hope to be the first water to get a 70lb carp."

I have enjoyed the thread MickyJ some good discussion. (I have also read some of your work on the Flylife forum.) You have got me motivated to come down to the Lakes and give it a try. I have not tried salt water fly flicking before. The next non footy, weather friendly, non working day, I will be down there with Waders and 5/6 weight rod at the ready. Hope to see you there. 8)

Haha...been there etc...as a 15 yo on hols with dad and brother...took us fishing from a pier...loads of other people around and with the first cast he hooks a seagull in mid-flight. Fought like mad to try and bring it down to release it but couldn't...had to just cut the line in the end...never been so embarrassed with lots of people saying 'oooh what a cruel man look at the poor seagull'

Btw wasn't suggesting you bbq the fish  would hope for some irony...take sausages to cook and free the fish...unless you want to release the sausages too of course  but thought a barbie and a beer would be a good way to end a social day out...make it off-season (footy) and you might even get a players team too.

Mickyj what size hook are you using?
I have an assortment of flies but I am a bit worried the hooks on some may be to big.

Hey Alaska
I started of using Mustard 34007 size 6 .Biggest problem every single hook was blunt!!
Swapped to Gamakatsu size 6 chemically sharpened . I was still getting tail spits but that's Bream fishing.

I hate buying or being given flies that are to big to cast with my 6 weight.Countless times i have struggled casting large flies swapped to something smaller and no hassles casting.
