wristwatcher wrote:=D> Well said Sir. They were still fun times though and putting your head over the ball when you know a guy named Grinder, Scurvy, Elsie, Taz, Tickets, Blute, Smudger Smith or Molly Molloy (broke my nose) was going to whack you was very character building. Id go as far as too suggest that its those early challenges that we confronted that has made us always have such a strong appreciation of the Hannigan Cup and its rich traditions. I know we suffered some devestating losses and that really helps appreciate the wins. It probably also makes us fairly protective of the records and the history. It also makes Onkas win even better as that was one of the great games of Gaelic and a superb Hannigan Cup final and a pleasure to be a part of even if on the losing side :(

Very much in the same way personally i started as a Minor in 1991 when we travelled to Aucland to take on one of Jimmy Connollys devestating squads and you started in 88 i believe (was that Melboune losing to the Vics in the last kick of the game?) as a 14 year old. We had a fairly heavy involvment/interest ever since and waited all the way up until 2003 before the SAs drought at the Nationals was finnally broken and then lucky enough by 2005 to be threepeated. This was an amazing 3 year run that those who had been around and worked towards truly appreciated the magnitude of. It was celebrated long and hard by many of those who brought the rich heritage of Football in this State to life.
I was recently told that the Victorian Minor squad of 2010 was the best one asembled PPPFFFFFFTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!! Another example of people making things up they really know nothing about. I have 8 hours of vidoe footage of the 2005 Undefeated SA Minor team who were a Gaelic Football machine. Not a footy team brought to together for a championships but a Gaelic Football team built from bottom in 2001 several of them as 14 year olds and mentored and taught the games its values and its traditions.I wouldnt let the incorrect stats bother you Mr Gunn the same way i dont let the negatives bother me. Well thats enough from me for a while on here for a while. Ive got another 7 months of volantary work to do for the association but if i can just take a moment to address the bunch of girls who abused me on preliminary final day for arriving to goal umpire late after i was told i wouldnt have to supply match officials and then continued to abuse me after the game in the presence of several commitee members. Once again i cracked the 60 game mark as a ref or umpire this year and worked behind the bar in excess of 20 different occasions. The fact i dont know your name says enough to me. Still not to worry i wont see them again until late October when the magical Gaelic fairies will have a new season prepared for them with just the wave of a wand  AHHh THAT FEELS MUCH BETTER NOW 8)

Oh yes....what a side that was 8)

Damn straight mate. Had a player who played div 1 in that team not make the starting line up and broke all the Gaelic records and various others including loudest team song sung from the top of the giant drop at Dreamworld

Probably the best grand final i ever had as i scored the first and Na Fiannas last goal and managed to sneak over 6 points. My opponent got sent off that day as i may have mentioned to him that i was having an OK game  . The man who sent him was the referee obviously and that was the late great Norman John Murphy R.I.P. Great memories indeed. But the stories dont stop there, after the game Paul Blute passed me the Hannigan Cup and.............the next 12 hours of this story are edited and innadmissable ;)

Ive been waiting for 3 years on this site for someone to bring up that game :D

KEEPING WITH THE THEME OF INNACURATE RECORD KEEPING
My phone has been running hot as i have slightly F3cked up the above GF. That GF i was reffering to was in fact the Farnham Cup GF on December 10th 1999. The Hannigan Cup of March 2000 was in fact Na Fianna v Onkas in the most one sided Hannigan Cup final in the last 23 years. I believe the midfield duo of Ponytailed Javwha and Da Wild Ting O,rielly lit the early minutes up providing forwards Liam Hennessy, Ken Fay, Mick Lawlor and co. ample score oppurtunities to register 3.7 before Onkas troubled the scorers half way throuhgh the first stanza. Much to the dissapointment of the huge Na F crowd and the defence brigade boasting the likes of Jay fay, Jnr Henessy, Paul Blute and co. I remember my opponent on that day saying to me just before half time, lets go have a beer at half time i dont wanna be sober for the second half. :D The opening goal on that day was scored by the one and only KENNY FAY. Na Fiannas own!

Comparing yourself to a side thats been in the comp for two years.... what answer are you expecting. Have you actually contributed to success your club achieved 20+ years ago?

Well we have done better than you in the past 2 years....if you want to compare that?

You were nowhere to be seen when I started playing for this club around 8 years ago and to see where we have come in that time. As a club we were almost dead, we had financial issues, most of our playing group had left and were close to folding. Yet we remain the oldest club in the league.

Considering your club couldnt even pay its fees in 2010/11 and is still yet to win ANYTHING you clearly have no idea. You are a footy player and that is all you will ever be. It's funny how you wanted that game so bad yet when push comes to shove you were so far from winning, and realistically we were probably 4-5 players short of our best side....

Yea you've finished above us in the last two years, but the head to head tally is in our favour I'm pretty sure, and after the minor round, we had finished above you. You won the one that mattered, and all credit to you for that, Flinders were a lot better on the day. However, I'd imagine you wouldn't be happy with where you finished considering how you you were talking yourselves up on here prior to the season with all of the recruits you'd managed to pick up.

You refer to the financial difficulties your club faced 8 or so years ago, as an already established club. You've been around a while and surely know how hard it is to get fees off blokes, and pay all the bills. Our financials probably could have been handled better last year, but to Steven Clay's credit (amongst others) this has been rectified, and our fees have been paid (I'm fairly certain). For you to bring that up is a bit of a cheap shot, as it has nothing to do with the onfield aspect of our club.

Yea we might be footy players, but I'd assume many of your players are too? Many of the players in the league come from a footy club or footy background, if we weren't playing the game I think the league would struggle for numbers, even more so than it does already. We are enthusiastic about our gaelic footy, and trying to improve all the time. I think most would agree we've improved from our first season form. We're pretty proud of our footy background, not sure if you could say the same, have fun in D5.

Just want to say RIP Jimmy Stynes on here. Why? Jimmy was still playing Gaelic for Victoria every October all the way through his AFL career. Sean Wight, who also died too young, did it too. Jimmy also rejuvenated the Vic Minor programme for a couple of years as a coach. I had the pleasure of playing against teams he coached, against him as a player and even named in an All-Australasian team with him. He took alot of shit from us and other states that was just pure tall-poppy syndrome and he came back year after year because he loved the game. He certainly earned a lot of people's respect in the gaelic community over the years. RIP.

Well said MG. I have not said anything about Jimmy on here or on facebook despite the fact we were lucky enough to have been a part of the Gaelic community with the great man and his brothers Bryan and David. The last 24 hours have made me recall every interaction i had with the great man over the years at championships and the one word i would use to describe Jim is "CLASS". In 1992 there is no doubt in my mind that he out coached our coaches in the Australasian Minor final and reversed the result from earlier in the week to upset the home state of SA and break our hearts with a thrilling 2 point win to the Vics.
In 1993 after his Vic Minor team had gone undefeated i took the time to point out to him at the Australasian ball that they only remained undefeated because they didnt play the wooden spoon winning SA team and that there wasnt a Victorian minor alive that could tag me out of the game. He humoured me and was so gracious and polite and was still happy to have a drink with me because the late Jim Stynes was a very classy individual. RIP Indeed

I was wondering if I would read anything on here about our relay on Sunday.

Yes that was horrible, we probably would of won if it wasn't for that train wreck. Our third runner dropped the baton as I gave it to him, mind you it was a cardboard baton and a standing start doesn't help either, then he tripped over and the bloke from Rosies fell over him. Luckily for us the Rosewater bloke who ran last dropped the baton and we were able to scrape into second place. The guy who ran last for Districts was quick and put it beyond doubt.

It was good fun, I haven't ran in a relay or any kind or running race since high school. $400 to the Districts boys for the win and a pretty neat trophy too.

Yea your 3rd runner let you down, our 3rd runner gained a fair bit of ground for us, and I think Toasty Clay would've brought it home regardless, but ya never know.

Whilst I'd love to continue this debate over who came 5th, I'd like to talk about a more pressing issue.

I understand the SA men's team is still without a coach???
Any more news in relation to this?
