FYI it has just been reported on the BBC news that according to US police sources he strangled his wife, smothered his son and hanged himself.
Very sad.

I don't care how many sporting achievements you have, when anyone commits a hideous, ruthless atrocity like this any memories of him being a champion must be cancelled out.
If the story is true, Benoit must be remembered as a twisted, sick-minded coward and is no better person than any other murderer in the history of mankind.
I am disgusted, appalled, and anyone with benoit memorabilia for their children must dispose of it quicker than he disposed of his family.

The news story on MSN today quotes a friend as saying he can't believe Benoit would harm his family. Things like this leave everyone in a state of shock clearly this person is still in denial.

"He was very happy with his wife and he loved his son Daniel," Ross Hart, a friend of Benoit and member of the Hart wrestling family, told the Edmonton Journal.

"This would be very uncharacteristic of Chris to do anything self-destructive. I find it very hard to believe that he would end his life or his family's."

The article reports that his wife filed for divorce 4 years ago fearing for the safety of her and their son, but then withdrew the application.

It's a terribly tragic event and absolutely devastating for all involved.

The WWE's reaction to the Benoit events was to put on a tribute show.
You have to question their judgment in doing so, knowing that Benoit had betrayed his family and then taken the coward's way out.
Then again, they have never been known for good taste...

I get the impression that while Benoit made a great impression professionally, he had a darker side and this time round he really lost the plot.

Agreed interceptor.
To honour the ba$tard was an insult to the families of his mudered wife and son.

Agreed and done.

Last night I chatted with smac jr for a while, gave him the details necessary for him to understand why, and we disposed of the merchandise. I felt we needed to chat prior to any tribute show or the like, so he understands why I turn off the tv when it comes on.

What was the feeling for him/her when that happened?
Must have been somewhat daunting to explain that to a child.

Far easier than the death of his Pop 6 months ago.

For an 8 year old, he has an incredibly inquisitive and analytical mind. The kid has seen plenty of trauma/hardship (parent divorced, family illnesses and deaths just to name a few) in his time and shows a resiliance that is lacking in most adults I know.

His questions took us to how it happened and even why it happened (I didn't speculate on either count, but promised him we would talk further about it as facts came to hand).

yeah there are many people still getting confused as all they know is his on camera persona and believe that is his off camera persona....important not to get the 2 confused.

as far as the tribute show goes it would be a tough call by WWE either way, it all became public less than 24 hours before RAW was due to go to air so they didnt have much time to react and they could not go ahead and air the Memorial Service for Vince McMahon which was planned (they faked his death as part of the RAW storyline)....that would have been even more bad taste...it is a tricky situation they found themselves in, I dont have much problem with a tribute show as long as they only talk about his in ring heroic's

Who cares about his acting career in the ring. He's a murderer. Piss on his corpse and dont have his funeral in the same place or same time as the other two.

Obviously had some severe mental illness - you don't kill your own child unless you do.

I don't see the need to disrespect anyone/anything as a result.

I am just not condoning my son's idolisation of his character.

Yeah, like i said, he deserves nothing, as in no honourary memorial or anything.
He should be left to die a criminals death, a quiet, yet undignified passing.
Let there be no memory of him.
But to piss on the corpse puts a person in nearly the same boat, that is vile and disgusting not to mention disrespectful to Benoit's family.

Though murdering his wife & child is totally unacceptable...
Chris Benoit was obviously a very sick man suffering anxiety, depression etc.
You have to understand the pressure Pro-Wrestlers must go thru.
re. 'Beyond the Mat'
Performing at least once a week through injury or not all around the World.
(Hence the drug addiction, painkillers or narcotic)
Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura suggested after the tragedy of Owen Hart's death
that grapplers should create a Union or Pro-Wrestler Association to give the poor buggers
more say into the goings on in their business other than being run into the ground by
ruthless promoters...
Hypothetically if 'The Canadian Crippler' took time off for counselling or rehab or whatever
this tragedy may very well have been averted.
'Til then, the way the business is run we're gonna see more & more Wrestler obituaries in
the months & years to come!
GO THE GROWL!!!

Yep, that's her.

The Raw Tribute was done before it was known that he was responsible for the deaths. I expect WWE to never mention his name ever again.

I've got a great (burnt) DVD of his best matches somewhere. He was always one of my favourites to watch.

Lots of potential problems have been listed as possibilities for this happening including steriods (he was significantly smaller 10 years ago), his disabled son being stressful, marital problems, etc. Doesn't really matter now, the sick actions have taken place. Very shocking and disturbing.

What I was trying to say is some are saying "hes a legend I cant believe he would do something like this" they are talking about his in ring character without knowing what he is like out of the ring

great post Snaggle....for anyone curious about the industry I highly recommend watching "Beyond the Mat" and you will understand it so much better....its a real tough ruthless business out of the ring
