Last night at Gaelic Park between mens matches and during The Irish demolition of the worst Australian International Rules team i have ever seen  I gathered together an informal 7 a side sub committee and was able to put the finishes touches on what has been a long 7 a side season prep. The competition this year looks to be very exciting and a good support network has been set up and a lot of planning has been done to ensure some of the flaws from previous seasons will be ironed out. The draw for the 11 weeks up until finals will be avail by Tues morning on the website and the only thing left is one final meeting with the treasurer to confirm the reduced costs this year.
GAELIC SOCIAL 7s 2011/12
- Comp runs on Wednesdays from Nov 2-Dec 21 and Jan 11-Jan 25. This will then be followed by a 2 week, 2 division finals series on Feb 1 and 8.
- 11 teams make up the comp.
- 2 teams this year will be made up exclusively of minors to help develop the boys and help facilitate SA,s return to being a Minor Football Powerhouse. 8)
- In the minor round, each team plays all 10 opposition and has one bye.
- Players already registered with a State league club will no longer have to pay rego and affiliation for 7s as well.
- Games will be at 6.45 and there will be 2 games on at both 7.45 and 8.45.
- Negotiations are still taking place regarding the "Steve Irwins" happy hour in the new bar facilities...Crikey :drinkers:

If you have any queriies please call the competition manager Tommy Javor 0402 699 811

Yeah mate i will be able to put round 1 on here Monday Morning. The very hairy young man who is doing the draw has a bucks show on Sunday but i will ring him Mon morning as obviously that will be the first round he does. From memory i think the Flinders teams requested two 7.45 games and Na Fianna requested the 8.45 game whilst Angry Leppers will have the bye. So based on that info it should be no clearer what time your team will play

7s teams and brief overview for the season.....

St. Brendans - Reigning Champs led by "The Polish Bear" Mildred Zaluski. Will be very strong again in 2011/12.
Onkas - Lost GF in overtime. They were 1 point away from being only the 2nd club ever to win the SA Gaelic triple last year. May well have the great G.Phillips returning to there line up. Pre- Season faves for mine.
Steve Irwins - easily the best post match drinkers in the league and full of enigmatic characters. Darling is their star.
Angry Leps - led by Tommy G can beat anyone on their day and often features the former State Captain Chris Carey.
Dingoes - The boys in fluro orange led by Froggy will look to take a leap knee-deep into the competition. Should be much improved and always play with great spirit. They have the worlds smallest mascot

Of the new or remodelled other 6.....
Flinders Over 35s - its gonna be nice to have blokes older than me playing ;) Unknown quantity at this stage.
Flinders Minors - Coached by Anto Keough apparantly there is talent to burn amongst this bunch and will be very good. 8)
West Ireland Minors - i believe this will be a Westminster based team led by former 2 x All Australasian assistant Coach Dave Flo. Expect Daves brother Jon to be floating around as well. Perhaps even Jons brother Mark.
Na Fianna - Team will contain a mix of new players to the club along with a couple of Irish boys each week. Dont expect their head coach to enter anything Gaelic without having some thoughts of winning it. Matty Hill will be their player to stop.
Christies Beach - will be led by 3 time All Australasian winner Brad "Goose" Gosling along with a couple of other blokes from Onkas i believe.
Mitchell Park Tigers - This is a Rugby based team who seem excited albeit perhaps a little inexperienced for the challenge that lay ahead.

VERY MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT WEDNESDAY NIGHT :D

Action from Gaelic Park tonight....

Flinders 4.14-26 destroyed Irish Australians 0.3-3
2 players this afternoon put on a Gaelic clinic and i was in awe watching their sublime skill mesmerize the opposition. Todd "My Lovechild" McSorelys second half was flawless with 100% effectiveness in disposal efficiency killing the game off as a contest by the 5 min mark of the 2nd stanza. I still cringe at the fact that this fella has only ever been in one South Australian Gaelic football squad. The 2003 victorious minors which he was forced to pull out of in the final days leading up due to AIS commitments from memory. He is the best dead ball kicker over distance in the league.
Never the less he wasnt BOG. Dale Agius was simply brilliant....no scratch that he was terrible  but his brother "Fabulous" Freddy was amazing. Had direct involvement with aprox 3.8 of the 4.14 and it is obvious why he played in the A-league. Nearly won the Association Medal in 2006/7 in only 7 games. Near impossible to match up on, plays with tenacity and agression and generates unfathomable power from minimal effort.
Some might read this praise as a little excessive but if you saw the output of these 2 young stars today and you enjoy Gaelic Football at its best then you could only applaud their performances
Flinders have also unearthed a couple of quality talls. I believe one may be Jordy Erskine whos name i recognize from the SAAFL. The other pleasing factor that i really enjoyed from the Flinders point of view was the return of Australasian championship winning players in Kai Dockerill, Matty Didge, Scotty Mac and Puck Haughey.
On a sad note Tommy "Tina" Stirling dislocated a hip after kicking a couple of goals and we hope he has a speedy recovery.
The oldest club in SA Gaelic Footy is sitting top on Plus43 and im salavating at the thought of having a crack at them in Round 8. Massive test against Onkas next week and im looking forward to Phillips v McSorely, Agius V Snoop Dog, Dumovic v Danny, Jordy V Whitto. Game of the year perhaps

In the other game...
Na Fianna 2.9-15 def Port 0.4-4
In what was a scrappy and sometimes spitefull clash a full strength NaF bolstered by the return of Co-Captain Nick "Not the Situation" Jolly was a little more polished in front of the sticks for a valiant, desperate and tough Port Districts. There were some heavy clashes and a couple of melee type infractions but to both teams credit at the final whistle everyone shook hands, had a laugh and left it on the park. Special mention to Toasty who contacted me after the game to thank me for the game again displaying maturity and leadership that will hold his club in good stead in the coming years. I assure all teams that Port will be no push overs this year and will upset 1 or 2 of the top 4 before seasons end (hopefully not us next time around ;) ).
I was very pre-occupied with rotations and other Coaching issues so im not in a position to give a good assesment of Ports best players but Toasty always got me nervous when he had the ball, Levi was strong aggresive and late in the game... "got his tits out for the boys, tits out for the boys  " One thing i will question is the use of BMX/gardening/douchey gloves. Jason Fay was the best player in SA Gaelic Football in 1993 and wore one glove, so someone broke his fingers so he had a reason to wear a glove. Seriously  on a dry night with a genuine O,Neills ball please dont wear gloves or a gallery of spectators will be obliged to take the p*ss out of you :) .
Na Fianna have unearthed a couple of real talents this year. Dean "Stop creeping Dan" Terlich was phenomenal. Drewy Read was playing with real passion and was in our best (Why Norwood delisted him is beyond me). Dave "Not in Javors house" McIrish directed traffic well from the last line and a guy who i think will be in the Top 5 for the Assocition Medal by the end of the years voting is a bloke that we call Brimmas. next week will see the debut of 4 more players into our squad bringing the total to 30. Thank God for 7s :D
My final note is one for all teams ; He who abuses a ref may be red carded which brings an automatic 3 week suspension. Both teams i think are lucky that Tommy G isnt on a power trip or several players may have found themselves on holidays

FINALLY.....
The boys on the BBQ are curious as to why so many of you are not interested in their meat. I believe the most expensive item is $5 and they have made $50 total profit in 4 outings. Get around it and support people and it will be there for 16 weeks. We have an awesome new bar with good prices and volunteers who are busting their ass to help create an atmosphere for family and friends and people are taking it for granted. Its not hard for each club to give a little support. If its not supported the BBQ will probably pack up and call it a day and once again we will have nothing. By now you should know its there and be able to say gday and outlay a massive $2 for a sausage in bread every now and then. There good blokes who are trying to help make Gaelic Park a better place to be. I bought Kenny Fay a sausage tonight and he said, "I love the sausage  " But seriously, you know its there, try and use it so we can enjoy it until Hannigan Cup day. GOOD VOLUNTEERS ARE VERY VERY HARD TO FIND :o

On another note anyone try the new sponsors Brew?? IMO not as good as Bulmers, but at 6% it will get you were you want to go......

Not really a fan of cider so I havent tried it yet - however after a stack of beers at Gaelic HQ i have been known to fall asleep "in cider" when i get home much to the girlfriends chagrin...

Pretty solid review there wristy, yeah freddy and todd were amazing, tore irish to shreds.

Jordy is on the port magpies list and played a fair bit of league footy this year, he and shaun mcregor will be a handful for most sides i would have thought.

Thanks for the wrap wristy, thought our first half was average but the second half was better...

Onkas will be a tough game, think we have only beaten them once in the past 5 years. They will definitely start favorites but with the inclusion of approximately 6 quality players this week we should hopefully give them a run for their money.

The comp is really tight this year, definately no easy games, makes it much more interesting that's for sure...

Thought Shawn Mcgregor had a great first up game for the club, really dominated in the air and provided some rebound from defence. Not sure jordy will be too happy being referred to as a Saafl player, been playing for the maggies fir the past couple of years in the sanfl. Also a special mention to Anthony Wilson in his first game of Gaelic, did really well and I doubt there would be a faster player in the league....

If they run that Gaelic7s carnival day like they did last year, id like to see a few novelty events such as the 100 metre sprint held! Andy Bachmann from the Taints would be a contender, as would that Reidy from Na Fianna.

Id also like to see the 100 metre sprint whilst solo-ing as an event!
