All the signs are pointing to a hardly fought out men's competition for 2009/2010! Huge game on the Friday night between last years 3rd and 4th placed teams Onkas and Western Ireland, should be a cracker... will also be interesting to see how the newbies Mitcham fare against last years grand finalists Na Fianna. Also any truth that Na Fianna have picked up former Saint Brendan's junior Nick "Saint Nick" Jolly?

Where are games played and time? I played when games where at M/Vale high.

Shoe Boy, all games are played at St Marys PArk in St Marys opposite Mitsubishis, maps and further info can be found on the www.gaelicfootballsa.com.au website!

State league games are played on Friday nights from 6ish, and Sunday arvos from 3ish, round 1 starts this Friday night. The Wednesday night Gaelic7s (7-a-side) kicks off in a few weeks also.

ONKAS 18/10 fav.-rumours suggest they have recruited well and the state snr debuts of whitto(s.a,s b+f at nationals),janetski(leading goalskis for s.a),stevo and the return of wade "sexy" saunders will make them hard to stop....gabe who?
WEST IRELAND 25/10 - It would be no SHOC to see these boys take the next step after 08/09 in what must be described as a massive underachievement for such a suceesfull club.Gags and Klunny were outstanding at the nationals.
ST. BRENDANS 3/1 - A bit of value for last years Hannigan cup champions.the loss of Millsy for the season could hurt but are certain to recruit the best of the state minors through the mini Pegararro connection.
FLINDERS 5/1 - On paper their names suggest they could be another pre xmas special.Pfieffer,Palmer,Haughey,Neesons,Agius,Mcsorely,Elbows Elbrough and recruits is a very impressive list....Consistency is the only concern.Keen for silverware no doubt as the last 20 years has produced nil.
NA FIANNA 8/1 - Damien "Moose" Emery has produced a couple of recruiting cherrys. Will the new blood blend with the experience of Fay,Hennessy,Lawlor,Hill and co.
MITCHAM 10/1 - Chris Carey and his Mitcham Hawks are unlikely to win the pre-season comp but will gain valuable experience for Hannigan Cup time. They are the unknowns of the comp and 10/1 may interest some of their players.
IRISH AUSTRALIANS - 25/1 - The loss of some key personell to Mitcham will hurt I.A who it would be fair to stay have struggled at times over the last few years. Still have some of the most talented SAAFL players playing in their team in Platten,Westergreen and Stevey "Ray" Clay.

Onkas seem to be favourites to take out the comp this year, but I wonder if they have healed their scars from last season, when in their "un-losable" semi final against Na Fianna, their team was engulfed by internal bickering and they only had 11 players rock up to the game... undermanned they lost the semi final and were bundled out, which was their only loss for the season! Could such a melt down happen again??

my mail has it that the artist formerly known as "St. Nick" has some major repayments to make on his motorboat.rumours are ripe that he is asking for $100 a game and has promised to bring 3 or 4 div 1 footballers with him.time will tell how this one plays out.

Sounds like some handy additions there!

But will Flinders O'Neill's be going all out for the pre-christmas cup again like last year, and again totally giving up after Christmas when the proper season (Hannigan Cup) kicks into gear...?!

With many players in the side playing soccer at super league level, makes it hard post christmas when pre season is in full swing. We are def more confident about our chances pre christmas but we are trying to develop a squad that will still do well when the recruits are unavailable. fingers crossed........

This weekends tips

MATCH OF THE ROUND
Onkas v West Ireland...West Ireland by 1-5pts in an upset.Onkas have many new players and it may take them a week to settle against the goats who have the least amount of changes from last year of any of the teams.Another key may be the new aero-dynamic haircut being sported by Dave Flo.It is said to have cut his wind resistance by upto 1%.

Na Fianna v Mitcham....Na Fianna by 5-10pts.Again a host of new players for both teams.Mitcham will be led by Chris Carey and Soxy and a host of new players from the Mithcham Hawks.Na Fiannas recruits include Motorboat,DT,Dirtbag,Stama the hamma,Gav O Really and some other old fat guy.Na Fianna experienced players should see them get the chocolates.

Irish Australians v St Brendans....St.Brendans by 5-10.This game may see the greatest change of personell of all games.I.A look like having a lot of new players.St Brendans rumour mill suggests it will have State minors coming out their wazoos. Its hard to imagine last years Hannigan cup champs dropping their first game.

Does anyone agree/disagree with these tips!!!!

Some pretty astute tipping there WW, tho i will go with the Matty Whitford inspired Onkas over Western Ireland just to be different...

Also does anyone know how Mitcham went in their practice match against Irish Australians last week? I wouldnt underestimate Mitcham - especially if Chris Carey is able to lure "South Australia's own" Fergal Crossan in from Melbourne for a few games!

As for St Brendans, there has been no big influx of players from the SA minors team just yet, as far as im aware. Tho the Taints are in the unprecedented position of having nearly all our players KEEN AS to play in the pre-christmas comp, usually most are hardly sited before January! Taints are in discussions with Irish to play 15-a-side for round 1, which can only be good for the league. Also look for St Brendans favourite son Clayton Lush to make his state league comeback this week!

think the goats are looking at playing 15 a side as well. as for recruits, i guess we will find out on friday night. have lost a couple to retirement, but should still be a strong line up.

my pick is for gavin Oreilly to do a hamstring playing for Na Fianna, and Dave (vp) flo to do a driver.

St Brendans 1 12(ish?) d Irish Australians 1 2

Mitcham and Na Fianna drew with Mitcham kicking an over with less than 30 seconds on the clock to tie it up.

I'm unsure of the Friday night mens game or any of the womens games results.

Yep a very smart looking St Brendans were able to run out fairly convincing winners on sunday arvo over Irish Australians. Mitcham look like they will be a tough game - A couple of good experienced players and look like a fit bunch. With a few games under the belt they will be around the mark.

I hear that West. ireland got over onkas by a couple of points in the clash of the round friday night....perhaps Schimma could tell us more.
