Hewitt v Baghdatis

Postby Wedgie » Sun Jan 20, 2008 2:07 am

Man, this is great to watch, ridiculous to be playing elite sports at this time of night but so enthralling.
Hewitt was 1 set down, then 1 set all, then down a break in the 3rd, now he's up 6-5.
Come on Ley Ley! :D

Great comeback from Baghdatis in the 4th set after being a break down and Lleyton serving for the match twice, won it in the tie break.
2 sets all now, record has now been set for the latest ever match in the Australian Open.
Crikey, Im not going to get much sleep tonight.

Crikey! What a win by Lleyton, all guts.
The only thing that makes me feel alright still drinking Coopers watching the TV is knowing its a half hour later in Melbourne.

Also, well done to Baghdatis, what a likable character he is.

Just finished watching replay on Fox. 2 great middleweights who can mix it with the heavyweights. Enthralling game.
Can't help but feel for baghdatis...you could see the energy sucked from him when he lost that epic 5th game. To play two gruelling 5 setters in a row took it toll.
Rusty played a smart game...the roche influence is starting to show. Changing tempo, more net trips, served the best I have seen for a long time.
Tough gig now with Djokovic next round with Fed waiting in the semis. Probably the hardest draw I have seen (except for baghdatis...2 Open champions and Open finalist in first 3 rounds)....hopefully rusty gets a couple of days to recover.
Go Lleyton and Casey...

How long will it take Hewitt to recover from playing until 4.30am?

I heard part of a press conference by the Organisers defending their decision to start at match at 11.49pm but I still can't get my head around it. They say there was no back-log of games so it could easily have been played the following day. I assume TV $$$$ and the chance to beam coverage into the US & Europe during their day was the motivator?
In between signatures .....

Reading all of today's papers, it was obviously a pretty fair stink going on behind the scenes on Sat night.

Organisers in trouble once the main Saturday draw went so long.
Told Hewitt / Baghdatis to warm up, and they would be on early, before consulting the women.
Asked the women to move to Vodafone Arena, who told them to get on their bikes.
Went back to the guys and said you will play, but only if a straight setter.
Hewitt / Baghdatis told the 11pm start rule was discretional, and then told at 11.15 they will play, once Venus had the break in the second.

All up, the organisers have copped a caning today, largely because different stories got told at different times.

Has put Hewitt really up against it for tonight
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

Amazing match and circumstances! I watched up until the end of the 4th set with mates, then went home and listened to the 5th on the radio. This was the first time I have ever bothered listening to tennis on the radio as it is one of the most hardest sports to try and broadcast over radio and the telecast is usually dead boring. Not this time though - Gerard Wheatley is an excellent commentator of all sports.

Hewitt and Baghdatis showed real strength of character, brilliant performances by both.

I can't say I have heard that either has really complained about the late start and finish, I think that they were more pissed off about the fact that they were told they were on next, only to be put behind another match.

Will be interesting to see if Hewitt's tune changes at all should he lose to Djokovic tonight. Full credit to him though - he might be a bit of a tool sometimes, but he is a tough little customer.
