Which surge are you referring to?

Steve Austin and The Rock were big factors in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Mainstream media got hold of pro wrestling due to Hogan, but real fans
were watching Flair in his prime in the late '80s,early '90s.
If you want to see great wrestling, check out Ric Flair in 1989 when
he feuded with Ricky Steamboat & then Terry Funk.
How pro wrestling should be.

Certainly the Hulk was a big reason to watch, but once the Macho Man and the Undertaker appeared, their first 2-3 years were compelling.

Savage was doing the athletic stuff from the top ropes way before so many others while just loved the whole Undertaker first story lines in WWF, culminating in when he met Yokozuna.

I voted that he had something to do with it, definately the most influential wrestler as far as getting wrestling mainstream.
The turning pont was when he played Thunderlips in Rocky III.
Having Hulk turn heal on WCW was pure genius and kept that compnay ahead of WWE for a long time.

For two decades I've always hated HULK HOGAN!
No talent, can't wrestle, heard he's an absolute primadonna f'wit backstage
& he's the personification of all that Septic Tank, flag waving, ignorant, bigotted
"We're so much better than everybody else!" garbage the rest of the World can't stand!
Not to mention 'Hogan Knows Best' that reality show which exposed to the World truly what a tossa the bloke is!
The golden age of WWF/WWE was in my mind without a doubt the 'Attitude Era' of the late 90's
with the likes of Stone Cold, Mankind, The Rock & DX etc.
GO THE GROWL!!!

No Vince shape Pro Wrestling Hogan helped develop it Vince had the Idea for Wrestlemania and to get rid of territories that Pro Wrestling was in the States. Look at it this was in 89 Flair battled Steamboat, Funk, Sting and had the Four Horseman and down south the NWA was huge. Up north the WWF had hogan, Warrior, The Road Warriors or LOD, Savage, Jake the Snake. WCW was just starting after Ted Turner brought Crockett promotions.

I reckon Hogan is the singlest biggest reason .. He effectively pushed wrestlings exposure and popularity toward where it is today, the Rockin-Wrestling in the mid-80's was about where it began.

Certainly not suggesting he was the best wrestler, hell I reckon half of the jobbers over time had more in ring ability than Hogan, but he had the physique, character and charisma to bring wrestling into a new era, which has been developed further since his heyday.

Hogan was a big part of the rise, as was other names (to a lesser extent) such as the Macho Man, Andre The Giant, Jake The Snake, Ultimate Warrior, Roddy Piper, etc. The way the federation was promoted by Vince at the time was also a big factor.

Check out the four horseman DVD
Flair having a chain match on a tape years and years back made me always want to see a chain match live.To say a chain match in local wrestling is a let down would be an understatement.

Hogan brought the KIDS back to wrestling you know take your vitamins eat your vegies that type of thing.

Vince buying out his dads company from under him the WWWF .And then buying out all the smaller feds and forming them into the WWF.Plus the invention of video tape and selling the show to networks all over the states.

But wrestling was dead it was banned form madison square gardens then hulkamania started .
And the rest is history.

But like Cena Hogan has a very small amount of wrestling moves .He did save and curse wrestling at the one time .
