night baseball at norwood who remembers ?

Postby bayman » Sun Aug 26, 2007 8:03 pm

who remembers the night baseball games at norwood oval ?, i first remember the 'local teams' playing & from memory it was & i apologise if i miss any & i will, woodville, glenelg, port, kensington, sturt & the redsox i cant think of any others but i'm sure someone will know, then they moved to the national league with the adelaide giants & then nothing i actually used to enjoy going to norwood & watching the baseball on the wednesday & thursday nights

some of the names i remember are the alexander brothers, elkson, barnett & i better add former glenelg reserves player nathan davison
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I remember when they had the national baseball on tv and that's when Adelaide Giants or something like that were playing.

I rememeber used to cut up norwood oval something soemthing amde it teh worst surface int eh leage bar none...disgracefull particularly where 1st base was.

BAseball gave Norwood oval no time to recover after the footy season so it was just cut up something chronic particualrly around the high wear marks of baseball, battters box, pitches mound and as I said before 1st abse.

Thank chr!st they folded

I started a thread back in the FootySA days about this, I remember the Giants matches quite well, even though I was 5/6. They had a small temorary grandstand in front of Coopers Hill I think, and the scoreboard was on the wing. The ground announcer used to call along the lines of "That's yours to keep, from ETSA utilities" when the ball was top edged over the grandstand, where people waited out the back for the balls to come over.

Quite a shame the way the ABL went down, because that would be a great way to spend an evening in summer, as Dutchy said.

I can't remember the year or the player (could even have been when I was with the juniors) but I know we had a least on rolled ankle courtesy of where 1st base used to be.

We used to have Giants players come out and take our baseball training sessions once a season when I was playing for Northern Districts BC. I went to a few matches and it was a lot of fun, even though baseball has to be one of the worst spectator sports in the world!

I went to heaps of games and i did at one stage have all the helmets now i only have 4 and one of them is autographed by the old hunter eagles team. I do have the two seasons of baseball cards that they had. and they are both in Mint Condition.

so i'm presuming no other player from any team has never rolled, sprained, twisted an ankle etc apart from bare patches on an oval, c'mon tassie that is clutching at straws

Bring back the ABL i wanna go back and watch a game at Altona with a Melbourne side Vs. an Adelaide Side. It would be fantastic to see baseball a mainstream sport here in Australia again
