Dangerous, dirty … but you wouldn’t pick a fight with him:
Auto Action’s 2007 V8 Supercar Drivers’ Poll
Holden’s Paul Morris has been labelled the “most dangerous” driver on the circuit by his
V8 Supercar rivals, according to the results of Auto Action magazine’s inaugural V8
Supercar Drivers’ Poll.
Morris also was voted the driver with whom his rivals would not want to pick a fight,
while he shared the mantle as one of the “dirtiest” drivers in the V8s with former
champion Russell Ingall and Bathurst winner, Jason Bargwanna.
Published in today’s issue of Auto Action magazine, the poll grilled all 30 of Australia’s
V8 Supercar drivers, plus the 16 team owners.
Garth Tander was voted the best V8 Supercar driver and the man most likely to win the
2007 title, ahead of his Toll HSV team mate, Rick Kelly.
While Tander was considered the best driver in the field, only 10 per cent believed he
was the fairest. That award went to Ford hero, Craig Lowndes. The reigning Bathurst
winner also topped the poll as the most respected driver -but, conversely, is considered
to be the most overpaid in V8 Supercars.
Lowndes also the support of the majority of V8 Supercars’ team owners, with 37 per cent
claiming he is the best driver in the field, just ahead of Tander and Holden Racing
Team’s Mark Skaife. While the five-time champion was voted one of the most wanted
drivers by team owners, almost one-in-three of his V8 peers voted Skaife the driver they
would least like as a team mate.
Retiring legend John Bowe maintained his reputation as ‘harder to pass than a kidney
stone’ with almost half the field nominating him as the most difficult driver to overtake.
Not surprisingly, the famous Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst came out on top, with
66 per cent of the drivers saying it is Australia’s best motor racing circuit. Winton Motor
Raceway, in rural Victoria, was voted worst circuit on the V8 Supercar series.
Auto Action Editor, Andrew MacLean, says the inaugural V8 Supercars Drivers’ Poll
has produced some surprising results that are almost certain to rev up the field ahead of
the eighth round of the series at Sydney’s Oran Park on August 18-19.
“Auto Action is the first magazine to collect the opinions of all the V8 Supercar drivers
and team owners on everything from their rivals, the racing and the current state of the
sport. And some of the results have really surprised us,” MacLean said.
“We know there are some great rivalries brewing in V8 Supercars, and these results
showcase who the driver’s rate – and who they hate.”
