JOE COLE and Michael Ballack were last night released by Chelsea.
England World Cup star Cole turned down Blues' offer of £90,000 a week because he wanted parity with the club's top stars, who are paid up to £150,000 a week.
Negotiations collapsed and Chelsea have finally withdrawn their offer, so Cole, 28, can go on July 1.
German midfielder Ballack, 33, is also leaving the Double winners.
He had wanted a one-year extension to his existing deal but once again Chelsea refused to meet his demands as the club attempt to impose a strict new pay code.
SunSport revealed Cole held a meeting with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger before flying to South Africa for the World Cup.
Tottenham chief Harry Redknapp - who gave Cole his big chance at West Ham - has also publicly stated his desire to sign the midfielder.

That's staggering really.

Who the heck does Joe Cole think he is? (I actually rate him, but with his injury record WTF is going on?) Shoulda taken his 90k per week and been happy, cos he sure as heck aint going to be getting even close to that at Arsenal, Man U or Spurs.

Ballack also surprises me. They paid something like 30m quid for him and now they shuffle him out the door? I guess it's better than paying his stupid wages a second longer. IMO - the game has passed Ballack. Time to cash in over in the States.

Just looked it up and you're correct.
There is an article that suggests Chelsea paid 25m to ballack as a sign on fee, but who knows?

Joe Cole is an idiot. Good player but he rates himself far too much, to think he should be on the same wage as Drogba and Lampard shows how clueless that guy is.

He probably tried the ultimatum routine and Chelsea called his bluff ... I agree that JC is a good player (football-wise, his olympic diving career isnt much chop) but not in the same league as DD or FL - I guess it's not unusual for the players to try it on these days to see how much they can get.

Blues refused to bow to Cole

Blues boss admits departure of England ace was down to money
Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Joe Cole's departure from Chelsea was down to economic differences.
The England international saw his contract at Stamford Bridge come to an end this summer and he has subsequently left the club as a free agent.
Cole's future was a subject of much discussion as the 2009/10 campaign drew to a close, with the majority of Blues supporters keen for him to pen a new deal.
However, an agreement could not be reached and the 28-year-old opted to move on after seven years in West London.
Ancelotti admits he is disappointed to have parted with a player of Cole's calibre, but claims the situation had nothing to do with him and more to do with the fact that the player was demanding too much money.

"No, because the problem was economic," said the Italian. "It was a problem between the club and Joe Cole, not me. We spoke about this but when the problem is with money, it is not my problem"

Hmmm, there seems a comon demoninator with players whose surname is Cole.

There's lots of talk on a Spurs forum about Chelski making a lot of positions redundant.
But the talk is of positions like the tea lady, the groundsmans assistants etc, etc. All due to the economic climate.

If true (which I highly doubt actually) why don't they move Terry on and cut their losses. Bring in Gary Cahill - sorted!

Never going to happen mate. He has a multi-functional role and is cheap when you weigh up all the things he does for Chelski

Club Captain
Centre Back
Family Relations Officer
Tour Guide
Public Relations Officer

Bugger me, Chelsea looking good. Kalou was red hot today agaiinst Wigan.

Terry was very lucky not to get sent off after his "retribution" on N'Zogbia. Amazingly the ref didn't even give a free kick against Terry

Did anyone notice that Ray wilkins was given the flick at Chelsea. Apparently is was a bit of a shock.

It is reported today that he claims his dismissal was "unfair".

So Ray wilkins is the man who had to take the blame for the current form and i will assume unless we are back to winning ways soon carlo wont be to far behind.... sad really even the great teams have to go though a bad patch now and then.

What's sad is that 2 loses constitutes a bad run and the assistant gets the chop

Don't disagree with you Duce. That's the expectation for Chelsea to be invincible. It's the closest thing to Italian football we have
