Former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan was appointed manager of Championship (second division) team Middlesbrough on Monday.

"It's a special job," Strachan told Middlesbrough's website (www.mfc.premiumtv) after replacing Gareth Southgate who was sacked last week.

"I don't have to be here, I don't need to be here, I want to be here. I don't need football but when I'm in it, I love it," added the 52-year-old after signing a four-year contract with the English team.

Former Scotland and Manchester United midfielder Strachan left Celtic in May after spending four years at the Glasgow club.

Middlesbrough, relegated from the Premier League in May, are fourth in the Championship after drawing 2-2 at Preston North End on Saturday.

Strachan has also managed Coventry City and Southampton, the team he took to the 2003 FA Cup final where they lost 1-0 to Arsenal.

Personal I think this is a good choice, it will give them the kick up the backside they need and they will grind out results. True they will probley play now some of the most boring football ever but as we all know results are what counts first the rest is a bonus, there is still time for boro to get themslefs promoted this season, even though I think they should stablise and give a big push next season.

didn't work at Covenrty though ID, and as for kicking them up the jacksie, that approach hasn't worked for Roy Keane at Ipswich. It take a different breed of manager to be successful in the CCC in my opinion.

And to be fair, boro aren't exactly struggling in the CCC so far this season

Personal I think Roy Keane's spine retired when he stop playing, ever since he has been a bit soft and lacking heart for me, he left Sunderland on some trival matter and I think he will walk out on Ipswich soon (he probley get the sack if they keep going they way they are).

As for Gordon it may not of worked at Coventry but there is a diffrence in the qualty of players he had at Coventry then is going to get a Boro, also while he was at Celtic they were successfull and they did attack (which is a must in the championship) but they also played some boring football (made Italy look attacking) and they may not be struggling but pretty sure the Boro fans want them back in the Premier league or challeging for title or playoff spots, personaly I think Gordon will do a good job but I guess we shall wait and see.
