Round Up

Liverpool inflicted Manchester United's heaviest home defeat in 17 years as they reignited their title bid with an astonishing 4-1 success at Old Trafford.
Benitez's men were forced to come from behind after Cristiano Ronaldo fired the Red Devils into the lead from the spot after Jose Reina had needlessly felled Park Ji-sung.
First Nemanja Vidic's dismal defending allowed Fernando Torres to equalise with a smart finish before Steven Gerrard fired the Reds ahead on the stroke of half-time with a penalty after being felled by Patrice Evra.
Vidic's day got even worse when he saw red 14 minutes from time when he hauled down Gerrard as he burst through with Fabio Aurelio curling the resulting free-kick beyond a motionless Edwin van der Sar.
Substitute Andrea Dossena added a late fourth as he latched onto Reina's long clearance to lob the Dutchman with an already sparsely-populated Old Trafford then emptying even more rapidly.

Andrey Arshavin opened his Arsenal account as Arsene Wenger's men climbed back into fourth place courtesy of a 4-0 home success over struggling Blackburn.
Arshavin found the net for the Gunners at the fifth time of asking as he bundled home from close range after Theo Walcott's cut-back from Nicklas Bendtner's probing ball down the right flank, although replays suggested Andre Ooijer may have got the final touch.
But there was no doubts over the Gunners' second as Arshavin picked up possession on the left of the box before tricking his way beyond Danny Simpson and then firing high over Paul Robinson from an impossibly tight angle.
The Russia international then drew a stunning save from Robinson in the closing moments with Emmanuel Eboue gratefully slotting home the rebound.
Eboue then added further gloss to the scoreline from the penalty spot after Martin Olsson had brought down Carlos Vela.

Middlesbrough snatched a last-gasp draw against Portsmouth at the Riverside despite being reduced to 10 men.
Pompey claimed a crucial advantage on the half-hour mark as Glen Johnson collected a short corner and attempted to turn inside, with the ball bouncing up for Peter Crouch to fire home an impressive volley from the edge of the area.
Boro's hopes of getting back into the match were dealt a major blow as Matthew Bates was dismissed 13 minutes from time after receiving a second yellow card from referee Martin Atkinson for diving in the area.
But Marlon King fired home from close range after Pompey failed to deal with a late corner and David James could only parry Tony McMahon's header, and there was still time for Afonso Alves to miss a one-on-one with James

Everton continue to press for European qualification as the pushed Stoke back into the Premier League's bottom three.
Jo continued his goalscoring form since moving to Goodison Park on loan from Manchester City, with goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen at fault as he allowed the striker's shot from Marouane Felliani's pass to squirm under his body.
And Sorensen did little better with the second, palming away Tim Cahill's header from Leon Osman's cross onto the foot of a grateful Joleon Lescott who could not miss from two yards out.
Stoke dragged themselves back into the game after the break as Ryan Shawcross was allowed a free header in the Everton box from Liam Lawrence's corner with the ball dropping just inside Tim Howard's far post.
But Felliani made the game safe at the death as a produced a moment of great control to bring down Leighton Baines' long ball and fire home via the aid of deflection.

Hull City boss Phil Brown claimed before the meeting with Newcastle he would be happy to take a point against their fellow strugglers, and that was exactly what the Tigers did.
Geovanni, whose most recent action at the KC Stadium was a display of petulance after being subbed against Blackburn which earned a stinging rebuke from his manager, headed his side in front after just nine minutes.
The Brazilian fed Craig Fagan down the left flank and he had time and space to pick out his team-mate who had made his way to the far post unimpeded.
But the Magpies were back on terms before the break as Steven Taylor showed a deft touch for a centre-back to guide Nicky Butt's cross over the head of Matt Duke.

Sunderland are far from safe and are glancing nervously over their shoulder after going down 2-1 at home to Wigan.
The Latics took the lead as dismal Sunderland defending allowed Ben Watson time and space to fire home from the edge of the box in the 12th minute after Chris Kirkland's long clearance.
The Black Cats were allowed to equalise as the Latics defence followed suit from their hosts, with Kenwyne Jones eventually heading Marton Fulop's punt into the path of Grant Leadbitter to slot home.
Former Newcastle midfielder Charles N'Zogbia then produced a moment of individual brilliance, running half the length of the field to beat Fulop at his near post, with the home side fuming play had not been stopped due to an injury to Jones.

Fulham claimed their first away win at the 15th time of asking as Bolton were sucked back towards the scrap for survival.
Jussi Jaaskelainen produced a great save from Bobby Zamora's volley from close range to keep Bolton on terms before being undone by a comical piece of defending.
Andy O'Brien intercepted Simon Davies' through-ball but only succeeded in guiding it beyond Jaaskelainen, allowing Andy Johnson to steal in and slide home.
But the home side responded immediately with Kevin Davies chesting the ball into the pass of Mark Davies before receiving possession back and beating Mark Schwarzer with an impressive finish across the Cottagers' keeper.
Fulham were back in front as Simon Davies kept his cool to score despite the efforts of Jlloyd Samuel on the line after Danny Murphy's initial effort had come back off the crossbar.
Diomansy Kamara added a late third as Fulham doubled their paltry tally of away goals for the season at a single stroke.

4th & 5th April

Man. Utd. 3-2 Aston Villa
Saturday, 4 April 2009
Arsenal 2-0 Man. City

Fulham 0-1 Liverpool
Hull 0-0 Portsmouth
Newcastle 0-2 Chelsea
W.B.A. 0-2 Stoke
West Ham 2-0 Sunderland

Round Up

Seventeen-year-old Federico Macheda sent Manchester United into orbit with a winner against Aston Villa in the second minute of stoppage time.
Villa looked certain victors once John Carew and Gabriel Agbonlahor had overturned Cristiano Ronaldo's opener.
But Macheda's arrival changed the course of the game. Ronaldo brought United level 10 minutes from time before the young Italian turned onto Ryan Giggs' pass and produced a brilliant finish.

Everton cruised to their biggest win of the season as they further cemented sixth place in the Barclays Premier League with a 4-0 defeat of Wigan at Goodison Park.
The visitors were demoralised long before the end, having failed to contain Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who scored one and had a hand in three others before he was substituted 19 minutes from the break.
Jo netted twice for the Toffees and Leon Osman got the other as Wigan's own quest for European qualification took a severe hit.

An injury-time goal from Yossi Benayoun gave Liverpool a 1-0 win at Fulham on Saturday and took them to the top of the Barclays Premier League.
It looked as though the Reds were going to pay for missed chances until the Israel international midfielder blasted a right-footed shot past Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.
The win put Rafael Benitez's men two points clear at the top of the table - although second-placed Manchester United have two games in hand.

Elsewhere returning Newcastle hero Alan Shearer could only look on from the sidelines as his side lost 2-0 at home to Chelsea.
Former captain Shearer received a rapturous reception as he made his debut in the dug-out after stepping in for the last eight games of the season in a bid to save the beleaguered club from Premier League relegation.
With his side third from bottom and three points from safety at the beginning of the day, Shearer had vowed to go for the win at St James' Park but despite their positive play, his side ended the day empty-handed.
Some terrible defending by Fabricio Coloccini gifted Nicolas Anelka a chance and when the Frenchman's shot hit the bar, Frank Lampard was on hand to convert the rebound.
It was quickly 2-0 when Florent Malouda capitalised on more slack defending to fire under Steve Harper and put the game beyond the hosts.
Newcastle should have pulled one back when Michael Owen's deflected shot appeared to go over the line before Ashley Cole cleared, but the goal was not given.

Returning duo Emmanuel Adebayor and Cesc Fabregas combined twice to give Arsenal a 2-0 win against Manchester City at Eastlands.
Captain Fabregas, back from a long injury lay-off, placed a delicate free-kick onto Adebayor's head for the Togo striker to nod home unmarked after eight minutes.
Fabregas' undoubted influence was in evidence again after the break when he played Adebayor in and Richard Dunne's failure to clear allowed the striker to double the lead in the 49th minute.

Stoke gave their survival bid a massive boost with a 2-0 win over Tony Mowbray's hapless West Brom at the Hawthorns.
Ricardo Fuller put Stoke ahead in the second minute after some poor defending and goalkeeping saw his speculative shot squirm under Scott Carson.
Albion started the second half as badly as the first and this time it was James Beattie who rifled past Carson, hitting the ball sweetly just four minutes after the break.

Middlesbrough lost 4-1 at Bolton to leave their survival hopes looking bleak.
Kevin Davies had given Bolton an eighth-minute lead only for Gary O'Neil to score a deserved equaliser seven minutes before the break. However, with half-time approaching, defender Gary Cahill was on the spot to restore the Trotters' lead.
Then Matthew Taylor's 78th-minute crossed free-kick somehow drifted past Brad Jones before Ricardo Gardner added a fourth to compound Boro's misery.

West Ham enjoyed a 2-0 win at home to Sunderland after goals by two young prospects.
After a largely tepid 42 minutes, West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green threw the ball out to initiate a superb counter-attack which finished with Luis Boa Morte feeding Junior Stanislas for the youngster to tap home.
In the second half James Tomkins' 53rd-minute header from Mark Noble's corner made sure of the points.

Hull and Portsmouth cancelled each other out at the KC Stadium despite both pushing hard for an unlikely winner.
While Hull opted to bombard the flanks in search of a goal, Portsmouth tried to play down the middle for much of the encounter but both sides were unable to produce a winner.
Pompey had to play for the last 10 minutes with 10 men after Glen Johnson was sent off for two bookable offences but the Tigers could not take advantage.

In the lunchtime Premier League kick-off, b4st4rds substitute Andre Ooijer scored a dramatic late winner against Tottenham to secure a 2-1 victory and ease his side's fears of relegation.
Tottenham had opened the scoring through a Robbie Keane penalty but then saw Wilson Palacios sent off before Benni McCarthy equalised.

Round Up

Saturday 11 April 2009
Federico Macheda came off the bench to snatch victory for the second time in a week as Manchester United responded to Liverpool usurping them at the top of the Premier League table with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland
Rafael Benitez's men briefly overhauled United at the summit after a Fernando Torres brace helped them to a 4-0 victory over Blackburn in the early kick-off.
But the Red Devils made up the deficit only a few hours later, with Italian teenager Macheda the hero just as he was against Aston Villa last week.
It means that United remain a point clear of Liverpool with a game in hand.

After a minute's silence in memory of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster
Torres lifted the mood at Anfield within five minutes with a sublime opener, the Spaniard taking Jamie Carragher's lofted ball down on his chest with his back to goal, turning as it bounced and looping it over Paul Robinson from the corner of the box.
Torres headed a second after 33 minutes from Xabi Alonso's free-kick and Daniel Agger made it three with a swerving long-range effort in the 83rd minute before substitute David Ngog's header put the gloss on the win in injury time.

At the Stadium of Light, United looked comfortable when Paul Scholes' 18th-minute header gave them the lead against Sunderland, but Kenwyne Jones equalised 10 minutes into the second half, heading the ball down and prodding it over the line from three yards.
However, Macheda came off the bench to divert Michael Carrick's shot past Craig Gordon in the 75th minute with his first touch to keep United top of the pile.

Third-placed Chelsea kept in touch with a 4-3 win against Bolton, who staged a remarkable comeback at Stamford Bridge having been 4-0 down with 20 minutes to go.
Michael Ballack put the Blues ahead in the first half and Didier Drogba doubled the lead three minutes after the break, poking the ball home after Frank Lampard had surprised the Bolton defence with a low delivery from a free-kick.
A Lampard penalty and Drogba's second made victory look like a formality for Guus Hiddink's side, but the visitors conjured three goals in eight minutes, strikes from Andy O'Brien, Chris Basham and Matthew Taylor setting up a nervy finale.

Arsenal went nine points clear of Aston Villa in the final Champions League spot after coming from behind to win 4-1 at Wigan.
Mido's snapshot crept under Lukasz Fabianski in the 18th minute but Arsene Wenger's side stormed back after the break, Theo Walcott, Mikael Silvestre, Andrey Arshavin and Alex Song all scoring to secure a comfortable victory.

At the other end of the table, Middlesbrough secured a vital 3-1 win against Hull at the Riverside.
Tuncay put Boro in front after three minutes but Manucho rose to head home Nicky Barmby's cross only six minutes later.
Matthew Bates (29) restored the home side's lead and former Hull striker Marlon King made the points safe in injury time.

Newcastle finally mustered signs of life under Alan Shearer as Andy Carroll's late goal earnt them a 1-1 draw at Stoke.
Just when it appeared as if the Magpies' long-suffering supporters would be left waiting for their miracle to materialise from their messiah in Shearer, so Carroll popped up to answer their prayers.
However, they should have been dead and buried by the time the Gateshead born 20-year-old headed an 81st-minute equaliser, cancelling out a first-half opener from old-boy Abdoulaye Faye.

Portsmouth moved further clear of the drop zone but will wonder what might have been after a 2-2 draw at home against rock-bottom West Brom.
Younes Kaboul gave the hosts the lead but Jonathan Greening equalised minutes into the second half after David James had blocked James Morrison's shot.
Chris Brunt then put the visitors ahead but Niko Kranjcar restored parity direct from a free-kick.

In the afternoon's other game, Tottenham boosted their bid for a place in Europe with a 1-0 win over West Ham, Roman Pavlyuchenko scoring the winner midway through the second half.

Sunday 12 April 2009
Aston Villa hit back from 2-0 and 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with Everton in a Premier League cracker at Villa Park on Sunday.
The result keeps Villa one point clear of Everton in fifth place.
Marouane Fellaini opened the scoring after 18 minutes for Everton before Tim Cahill nodded home the second four minutes later.
John Carew pulled one back before half-time but Steven Pienaar looked to have secured all three points for the visitors when he restored the two-goal lead shortly after the break.
But James Milner's sublime free-kick and a Gareth Barry penalty drew Villa level.
Both sides had chances to snatch victory in a frantic finale, but the game ended all-square.

Two goals from Clint Dempsey saw Fulham recover from a half-time deficit to earn a rare away win as Manchester City went down 3-1 at Eastlands.
Steven Ireland had given City a first-half lead, but two goals from Dempsey either side of a Dickson Etuhu strike turned things around in the second period, earning the Cottagers only their second away victory of the season.
The three points take Roy Hodgson's side to eighth in the Premier League while Mark Hughes' side remain in the bottom half.

Some big combinations this week.

At the foot of the table, should Hull and Toon win, the The Cats are in the bottom 3, but Hull can't buy a win these day's and I don't expect that to change at Bolton this week.
Sunderland visit Pompey desperate for the win that should make them safe, so another tense game that should be close. Portsmouth should be a bit more relaxed and that might help them get over the line and leaving the Black Cats in trouble.
Boro have a chance against the out of form Villa to keep the pressure on Hull and Toon, whilst WBA have won thier last two home games, scoring three times in each, but against Liverpool ???

Liverpool have to win and hope Arsenal can do them a favour at United to keep thier hopes alive, but if the Red Devils win then it's good night vienna. Arsenal are going to have to settle for that 4th CL place via the qualifiers and after the heavy defeat at home to Chelski I don't expect them to give Liverpool any hope of stealing the title.

With only 3 points separating Fulham in 7th and Man City in 10th, that last Europa spot is very much on for any of them with the biggest game being Spurs v City. Both need the win to keep the pressure on the Cottagers so it should be a good game.

Fulham will find it tough at the Toon. thier away form hasn't been great and Newcastle will be on a high after putting local rivals Boro to the sword last week. but fulham are no pushovers so expect this one to be close again with neither wanting a draw.

Of the remaining games, Chelski are safe in the CL and only have a chance fo finishing runners up whilst b4st4rds have done enough this year so both are only playing for pride. I expect Chelski to win but don't expect a cliffhanger. West Ham travel to Everton but as at today it is still not clear whether they will qualify for Europa even if the make 7th spot due to some clerical error. Eveton are sure of a Europa place so this could ba an open game with more than a couple of goals to watch. Stoke and Wigan have nothing to lose, nothing to gain, so expect a City party as they sign off thier 1st EPL campaing with a win.

nice to see the yellow cards were being waved in every direction towards arsenal players today. No way was arshavins yellow card a foul as the replay clearly showed NO contact was made. Didnt help when arshavin didnt make a fuss about it. although shows maybe he just gets on with the game .... Yes the fouls and tackles on Evra deserved cards but some of the fouls today didnt deserve yellows. Dont think any man united players got yellows?? hmmmmmmm

This week's fixtures

Arsenal v Stoke
Aston Villa v Newcastle
Blackburn v W.B.A.
Fulham v Everton
Hull v Man. Utd.
Liverpool v Tottenham
Man. City v Bolton
Sunderland v Chelsea
West Ham v Middlesbrough
Wigan v Portsmouth

OK, so this is it. For the Cats, Hull, Toon and Boro, thier whole season boils down to this week. Boro need a miracle, firstly they must win and then have to rely on both Toon and Hull losing to have any chance, and add to that they will have to over turn a goal deficit of 4. The Hammers on the other hand have nothing to play for, Europa is out of reach and the relegation trap door is a long way off. So how will they play, relaxed easy flowing footbal, or disinterested, we are going on a summer holiday football. True professionals and a passionate Cockney crowd will say they will give it everything and with Boro missing the only stand out player they have in Stuart Downing, my money is on West Ham for a home banker.

So who else is there? Toon have a tough away game at Viulla. They are without key defender Bassong and imploded a couple of weeks back with joey up to his old antics. It's a must win game for them, so they will take it to Villa, who despite only a come from behind draw last week at Boro, reality is that the Villans should have walked away with all 3 points, suggesting that at last they have put that poor run of form behind them. Sitting easy in the Europa spots with no chance of CL football next year, they should be going out and enjoying the game whilst Toon will be tense, nervy but above all committed. A draw seems good for this one, as Toon just won#t have enough in the locker.

The big talking point this week is United playing a weakened side at the Tigers. If you think that is going to make a jot of difference, forget it. Fergie does not breed also rans, at any level. United still have enough class to turn over Hull and despite a great fight back against Bolton last week, Hull's inexperienced nerves will go against them and Fergie will have the last laugh.

That leaves the Cats at home to Chavski. Well there is one thing as sure as eggs is eggs, and that's how glad the Cats are that this game might not be the life and death game it could have been. don't get me wrong, they will be well aware that a loss at home, and a win for Toon and Hull, would see them down, but they will grateful of the points advantage. Chelski will win this by a country mile but Man U will save the Cats.

As for relegated WBA, they have a trip to b4st4rds and even despite my bias on this one, expect the Baggies to go out with a bang rather than a wimper unlike Big Sams rovers. Two 3goal plusw home wins on the bounce gave the Albion a glimmer of hope and they will be desperate to go out on a win.

The battle for the last Europa place coincidentally invloves both Merseysiders, with Everton taking a trip to Fulham and Liverpool hosting Tottenham. Fulham's home form has been thier saving grace this season and i don't expet that to change on Sunday. Everton are there and won't have the passion to win that the Cottagers will. Liverpool on the other hand will want to finish as close to Man U, who have been thier driving force all year, as they can and will turn Spurs over comfortably. Welcome to europe Fulham.

The remaining games as all pointless affairs between safe side with no chance of winning any thing other than what they already have. I expect Arsenal to be too good for Stoke who had thier end of season party last week. City take on bolton in a mid table local derby, but it is one of those ? Finally Wigan host Pompey at a fanless at JJB. pompey fans have a long, long trip for a no nothing game whilst Wigan have struggled for any home support since they came into the league so don't expect this one to be a noisy, passionate affair, all the ingrediants for an end of season draw

RE the comments about Manure playing a 'weakened' side, I totally agree. Their 2nd and 3rd 11 would easily manage to stay up in the EPL, so Hull will need a miracle not too far off what Boro need.

I think the top 7 places are all decided unfortunately. Well played to Fulham though. Great season. Schwartzer played a BIG, BIG part for them and I wouldn't be surprised to see him snapped up by a bigger club come silly season.

At the end of Sunday though, lets just hope for an EPL without Newcastle.
