That sign is a lot less insulting that a lot of things Kosmina said on SBS in the 90s about South Australian clubs, of course all AU supporters either have a very short memory or are johnny come latelys.

Fair enough mate, you've always been a respected person in my eyes but have taken a further step upward with that comment.
The guy is a tosspot, I still cringe when I think back to some of the things he said about South Australian sides sitting in the comfort of his Sydney studio in the 90s.

That's where we agree to disagree.
If NSL clubs had made loses like the A-League clubs had they wouldn't have lasted 3 years let alone over 25 years.
Produced a lot more higher standard players and was a higher standard comp too.
Its amazing what a bit of razzamatazz and marketing will do but its no suprise seeing as how well the AFL goes.

You beat me to the punch - I was going to mention the AFL and in fact there are still clubs doing it tough.
So, i'll disagree with that point.

The standard probably was higher in the old NSL days, but we didn't tend to lose as many players overseas as we do now. From my recollections when the NSL was at its peak (late 80s, early 90s) most people looked to England and if they couldn't get there they stayed home. It wasn't until the mid 90s (when the NSL was in decline and becoming an administrative joke) that we started to see so many players head overseas - and they started going to places like Switzerland, Germany, Italy etc who'd seen very few Aussies try out there. Hence now - the best of the best are OS and the standard of A League isn't as high. I reckon the standard will improve in the future though.

But, I could be wrong in this and would be corrected if you have facts to knock me over.

But yes - you're right about the hype, that's helped significantly and I really can't see whats wrong with it. Every other sport of any note's hyped - that's what's needed today. For example cricket needed so much of a revival they hyped it up by creating a new game and they've seen added more hype by creating another Ugly Step-Sister (her name's 20/20)

Yeah I will disagree with you mate, the NSL was a very good standard, players like Viduka, Tobin, etc used to walk into the Socceroos team, now the A League players are lucky to put together our 3rd side.
We also had internationals like Dixie Deans (who played for Scotland) playing for NSL sides, and that was when they were still at an age when they could play soccer unlike Yorke or Romario who were 95.
Also a lot more NSL sides an a chance for all clubs in Australia to get there if they were good enough which was great.
Its funny that you mention the late 80s and early 90s because I think the late 70s was the golden era.
I must admit it did die off in the late 90s though which carried on into the A-League.
Many AU players wouldn't have even got a look in at most NSL clubs in the mid 90s.

Those blokes (Viduka, Tobin) did walk into Socceroos sides - but again that's because there were so few Aussies overseas playing at a higher level.

You're right about the Internationals though - I was thinking about that the other night. Romario was bollocks (a friend bought we a United shirt with his name on it!) but we're seeing more quality coming in. Melbourne's Fred played in the World Cup, Zhu's a quality player from China. so it's starting to happen - this really is a rebuilding period. It will get better. That's why I'm so excited about it.

I loved the old Adelaide City days when they were playing at Kensington. I used to think it was a buzz to go down there for athletics and change in the same rooms the Zebras used. But the game faded for reasons only soccer knows about in the late 90s. It's a new dawn.
