Brisbane Roar - Gold Coast

Postby scoob » Mon Feb 14, 2011 9:53 am

Has anyone else heard that the Roar and Gold Coast are to merge next year?
Have it on pretty good authority that it is gonna be happening and will be announced shortly... How can a side have such a dominant year like Brisbane yet have such little public interest - hopefully a move like this will consolidate the fans and create a sustainable club up there.

Haven't heard this and find it highly doubtful. Brisbane had 20000+ in there return to suncorp on saturday night whilst Gold Coast is bank rolled by one of australia's richest men. Could maybe see Brisbane doing something with the Fury seeing as though they are all but screwed for next season but find it highly doubtful there would be anything happening with GC.

QLD is Rugby city.....I was in Cairns in 2004 when Brisbane Lions were in ther 4th consecutive GF and all they got was a metion saying good luck for 10 secs and yet the were going on for about 5-10 on the NQLD Cowboys on making the prelim final. Not surprised to see GCU and Fury suffer

Nth Qld and Sth Qld are two very different beasts. That scenario wouldn't be all that different to the coverage the melbourne storm got upon there 4th consecutive GF.

Soccer was never going to work on the Gold Coast. The NRL already has a pretty massive market there and AFL made no secret that they would be getting a side on the Coast which they have done. The basketball has been there for a while and has cornered the market that they desire.

Also while the GC population is fairly large it is made up of alot of part time residents, holiday goers, elderly people and young party goers probably not really the ingrediants to create a very good supporter base.

I know Tasmania is not a massive Soccer state but i truly believe which ever national sporting comp can get in there first will make a massive winnner out of it. Call them Tasmania Tigers/Devils/Islanders etc etc etc, put them in the green/red/yellow colours and have them play at a specialise soccer arena which is cost effective at running with around 5-10k crowds.

At some point, even if it isn't right now, Clive Palmer is going to get sick of pumping millions and millions of dollars into something nobody cares about and GCU will fall over.

Culina already wants out, Caravella is gone, and the boss will follow at some point.

At Newcastle actually with his old man, talk is Smeltz is heading elsewhere as well. Van den Brink gone too.

If the crap crowds continue (and they're not going to get bigger with those guys leaving), they'll last two more year, tops.
