Yeah its a pretty harsh start, just got through round 4 and some of us have done 3 away trips.
5 of the first 7 are away, atleast next season though we get Sydney at home twice, and only away once.
The FFA says they put us away to start heps cos of afl in Adelaide, but I think 5 of 7 is still to many.

Yeah, a few of us had Centrals shirts on, very well represented on this trip, probably over half the group.

Do you mean the Malta National shirt? thats Alex, runs the West Adelaide Cheersquad, you might know him from there.

The group actually completley cleaned the Sydney CBD Woolworths out of Celery.

Had quite a few drinks with Phil over the trip, was great fun.

It's a Chelsea thing from waaaaay back. The stupid Chelsea fans sing a song that goes:

Celery, celery, If she won't come, we'll tickle her bum with a lump of celery.....celery, celery... and on it goes.

Back in the 70's it was death by vegetable at Stamford Bridge where Chelsea fans would bring bunches of celery, sing their song, throw celery sticks at one another, and then use it to incite a brawl with the firm of the opposing team. Who would have thought celery would be used as a weapon!

Then in the 80's some bright sparks realised it might be funny to throw the celery at opposing players taking corner kicks at the Shed end of Stamford Bridge. Again more violence was incited.

Finally, in the early 90's when people actually decided to go to the football to watch football rather than start fights (a few years before Roy Keane famously called Chelski fans the prawn sandwich brigade) celery was banned from Stamford Bridge.

Anyhoo, they still sing the song over here, and it's as stupid and pointless as when it started, but it's funny as hell if you ask me!

Good to see United fans adopting the traditions of the EPL. I'll see what else I can learn for when I return to RADelaide.

That's bizzare. Must have a few cockneys infiltrating their ranks.

Although, aren't you a West Ham fan Sam?

Would have thought you'd get on their song:

I've been blowing bubbles, pretty bubbles in the air,
They fly so high
They reach they sky
Pretty bubble in the air......UNITED...UNITED...

Still, as long as there aren't any Chelsea Smiles or Glasgow Kisses handed out, it's all good!

yeah got quite a few mates that are from the UK and are Chelsea fans that brought it in at United, i got them to come along to the SANFL GF, and sure enough they bought their celery along to that 2, and after the Messenger article on Centrals supporters with celery i get the feeling it may become a more regular thing, just for the pisstake factor if nothing else.
Its not been thrown at United or Centrals, just waved for a laugh when singing the song, but both have now adopted it as their own in their respective leagues i guess.
Was quite funny when the Sydney CBD woolworths ran out of Celery on the weekend.

Celery-brations
Melanie Reid

WE'VE heard of theatre goers arming themselves with tomatoes, but football fans waving around celery sticks?

A mob of celery-waving Central supporters were spotted at last fortnight's Grand Final victory, thrusting the green sticks into the hands of other unsuspecting fans at AAMI Stadium. The Celery Squad's origins can be traced back to Chelsea FC, an English premier league soccer team based in west London.
Chelsea fans are well-known for their celebratory ``Celery'' chant, which often results in fans throwing the vegetable onto the ground. Soccer officials have been forced to perform bag checks at Chelsea home games to stop celery-throwing incidents. While News Review Messenger has not heard of any reports of celery-throwing at Doggies matches, the Central fan forum was this week buzzing with rumours over the Celery Squad's appearance at the Grand Final. One fan jokingly speculated the celery had been brought to the game to complement the roast chook being served up on ground.

Classic stuff. Personally I think it's quite amusing.
