10 years is a long time to predict, and soccer has come a long way in Oz in the last 3 years, I can honestly see the sport reaching unprecedented levels in this country as it's the biggest global sport.

Whether that takes 5, 10, 25 years etc is another matter, but I think it will grow significantly throughout the country from where it is today.

CP, it's been said since our first World Cup appearance that soccer in Australia would take off and dominate.

A League crowds are well down this year.

Now that both the AFL and NRL seasons have finished along with all state league afl/rugby I think we will see the crowds start to pick up again...

Yeah that's fair enough RaB, perhaps my post was more of a personal opinion, but I still believe in it ... Participation levels are far far higher than they were since our first world cup, and whilst the coverage of world leagues was minimal to non-existant back then, today we can quite easily monitor the biggest leagues and competitions in the world via TV and the internet.

I think that's a fair point C_P. The access you now have to EPL and the exposure in genral will do a lot to get young people interested. I think you problem is population. Australia has always been a sporting nation, and you can see by the crowd levels in Melbourne of AvFL games, there is a hell of a lot of competition on other team ball games. And cricket is pretty popular over there too. The question I guess is, can fans of Aussie Rules take to the "other code" in the summer.

Football, oops, soccer is a winter sport in essence, like footy, rugby etc.

The delay on soccer/football reaching higher levels will initially be due to finances IMHO ... There's only so much money can float around the codes here (whilst returning a profit), and the AFL in particular has a pretty huge head start ... I'd be a little nervy if I were other sports though.

CP, agreed. The A-League is really the only true summer comp that get's decent numbers. The Sheffield Shield gets no-one and basketball has gone through the hoop, so the A-League really has summer to itself. If they moved back to winter it'd be the death knell...

The thing Football has going for it, is it's a world game, and hence the big multi nationals ie Hyundai, Nike, Qantas will always be on the look out for promotion opportunities overseas.

MIC,

Second Leg; 22 Oct 2008 @ 17:00 (Uzbeki time)

* They are 5.5 hours BEHIND us, so it'd be a 2230 start for us local time*

FINALS

First Leg on the 5 Nov 2008
Second on the 12 Nov 2008

I will be in Japan all of November, are there any Japanese teams left in the comp that we might end up playing on the 5th?

had a great time at the game, best atmosphere at a game I've ever been to all be it only 10 or so. Personally I thought the crowd giving it to Rivaldo was fair enough, you can't rest on your history while still playing the game and getting a pay check, imagine if he was pulling that crap while playing for Adelaide, no one would put up with that. Plus his tackle where he went down deserved a card so he rolls around, stretchered off and then back on straight away... crap, crap ,crap. Let's hope the FFA can help out in some way. Will be watching the next leg at a pub and looking forward to it.

Yeah and give it the large to the Jap fans.

We beat them in New Guinea in 1945 and we'll beat them in the ACL in 2008!

Come on you Reds!

Very very cool. Was planning on being in Tokyo around that time so hopefully Urawa get up, it's not too far from central Tokyo. Otherwise I'll be off to Osaka. Me thinks I should contact United regarding tickets.

Yes, I stand corrected - Munich! Probably would have been sweeter singing it as an away fan!
