Thought it might be worth starting a thread on Aussies OS.
They often move and are out of our eye a bit, so it would be good to keep track of them.

Australian striker Joel Griffiths scored the only goal of the game to keep Beijing Guoan top of the Chinese Super League as they edged arch-rivals Tianjin Teda at home 1-0.

Griffiths scored the winner only ten minutes in while Tianjin were reduced to ten men in stoppage time when midfielder Tan Wangsong was sent off for a reckless challenge on keeper Yang Zhi.

"I will give credit to Joel for the valuable winner he scored today," said Beijing coach Lee Jang-soo. "Overall, our performance was fairly good today."

Beijing now have 22 points and are on a four-game winning streak.

In other action
Defending champions Shandong Luneng are level on points with the capital side after they defeated Hangzhou Lucheng 1-0 away, but lie second due to goal difference. Li Jinyu scored for Shandong after 24 minutes.

Elsewhere, Henan Jianye remain four points back in third after they narrowly beat Changchun Yatai 1-0 thanks to a 82nd-minute strike from Neituo, while Guangzhou Guangyao are a point behind in fourth after they got the better of Shanghai Shenhua 2-1.

Changchun also have 17 points in fifth, as do sixth-placed Dalian Shide who were held to a 0-0 draw with Shaanxi Baorong.

In the day's other games Chongqing Lifan were held by Chengdu Blades 1-1 and Changsha Ginde beat Jiangsu Shuntian 2-1.

Forgotten Socceroo Nathan Burns still a World Cup contender

AEK Athens and former Adelaide United star Nathan Burns hasn't been forgotten by Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek.

Ahead of Wednesday night's clash with Japan at the MCG, attacking midfielder Burns confirmed Verbeek had shortlisted him before naming a 30-man squad for the Socceroos' last three AFC World Cup qualifying matches.

It's understood Burns was earmarked to feature in the Socceroos' final run home to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

But his Socceroos inclusion depended on whether the experienced big guns would turn up for the final phase of qualifying to appease the marketers.

There is growing concern that experienced Socceroos, including Harry Kewell, Lucas Neill and Mark Schwarzer, all face the risk of burnout in 12 months' time when the World Cup kicks off if they don't have a proper rest before their domestic seasons starts in August.

The scenario favours Burns for another Socceroos cap, and Verbeek is keen on keeping the 21-year-old in camp.

Burns cut his European teeth when he made his debut for UEFA's Europa Cup-bound AEK in February this year after a stop-start pre-season due to niggling injuries after he arrived in Greece from Adelaide last June.

"I had a brief chat to him (Pim)," Burns said.

"From now until the World Cup there's something like 10 games that are not on FIFA (calendar) dates. So he will bring in players to see how they go."

Burns said he's happy in Greece but knows he must have a good club season to win one of the 23 jerseys on offer at the World Cup.

He rejected speculation he was set to be loaned back to Adelaide United or new franchise Melbourne Heart in the World Cup year.

"My club is definitely big enough and if I'm playing there, then I'm good enough for the World Cup," Burns said.

"The World Cup team gets picked from your club football. I've got to get that right first and then the World Cup team will come if it all falls into place."

Burns made his senior international debut against Singapore in 2007 under former coach Graham Arnold, who later fired the midfielder from the Beijing-bound Olympic Games squad last year.

"You never know your luck; for example I was in every game for the Olyroos and missed out on the (2008) Olympics," he said.

"Not everyone can go (to the World Cup), and that's life."

Craig Johnstone was a sellout who chose to play for England, but was never good enough to win a senior cap.

Sounds like he's an 'all about me' type of player, using his Greek U/21 experience as a leveraging tool to gain Olyroo selection. If that's the case, he either needs to bugger off to Greece full time or have Timmie Cahill belt some sense into him and give him a lesson about loyalty.

The thing that shits me about this article is the first sentence describing him as Greek-Australian. He's frigging Australian. He was born in Sydney, raised in Sydney, played U/17's for Australia, then decides to bugger off overseas because he has Greek parents. Whatever.

Just to play Devil's Advocate (pardon the pun) what about all those players born in other countires that then played for Australia e.g. Milan Ivanovic born in Serbia grow up there played for Red Star and then when the war there started came to Australia and played for Australia or even Kevin Muscat or Robbie Slatter who was born in England but played for Australia what does this make them. Also how about someone like Christian Vieri who was born in Italy but grew up in Australia yet still played for Italy what does this make them??


p.s. Craig Johnstone was born in South Africa and just like the cricket team back in his day South African teams were not able to compete in Internationals because of arparthied and like alot of other players they chose to play for another country.

I reckon that comment on Big Sash was tough too. He put himself out there for selection. In the best form of his life and heading towards the pointy end of his career. He was ignored for Australia, I reckon he deserved to take up his chance with his 'Mother' country.

Correct. He never said he wouldn't play for Australia, but at the age of 30 he had to take whatever came his way and he took them....

I think Sash made the right move to put his hand up for Macedonia as well, he won't get a look in with the Aussies so good luck to him.. would have loved to see him named for them though.
