The stage is set for an emotion-charged A-League season opener next Friday when Robbie Fowler's Perth Glory meet the Liverpool star's former team North Queensland Fury.

Not that new Fury captain Ufuk Talay is giving anything away.

Talay was officially named North Queensland skipper for the new season on Thursday, taking over from the reins left by Fowler and co-captain Robbie Middleby who is now the Fury's head of football operations.

Former Tranmere Rovers midfielder Gareth Edds is Talay's deputy.

The pair head a new-look leadership group also featuring Togo international Eric Akoto, ex-Roar midfielder Chris Grossman and former Northampton Town and Walsall defender Mark Hughes.

Fowler turned heads when he left the cash-strapped Fury during a nightmare off-season for the club to take up a deal with the Glory.

But if there was any lingering ill-feeling over their former marquee player's high profile departure, Talay certainly wasn't letting on.

"It is going to be a great game," Talay said of the clash in Perth.

"But with Robbie moving on, that is part of football.

"Obviously losing a player like Robbie, it is a big loss but at the end of the day players come and go but the club is always there." Not necessarily - during the off-season the Fury almost folded.

Football Federation Australia was forced to step in and save North Queensland in April when original Fury boss Don Matheson withdrew his financial support after the club reportedly lost $4.5 million in their inaugural season.

Just eight players, including Talay, were retained but the Fury have since regrouped with a quality list on a no frills budget under new head coach, ex-Czech national mentor Franz Straka - considered their biggest coup since Fowler.

"The boys have got a lot of respect for him and what he has done in the game," Talay said.

"We obviously want to get out there and be competitive - we would love to make the finals.

"We have a new structure with the new coach coming in, a new philosophy.

"It is a new era, a new team. "Everything has been positive. We can't wait for the season start." Talay was a tower of strength during the testing off-season - a fact not lost on Straka who handpicked the ex-Sydney FC star for the captaincy.

"Ufuk is a very experienced player who has played football at the highest level both here in Australia and abroad," Straka said.

"He is well liked and respected by everyone associated with the club, particularly his fellow teammates, and his strong on-field presence makes him the right person to lead the team forward." Overcoming a calf complaint, Talay is hopeful of running out in the Fury's final pre-season match - against Adelaide United in Townsville on Friday night.

Meanwhile, the Fury's head of sports science Alan McCall said he would leave the club to take up a similar role with English giants Liverpool.

The 30-year-old left Scottish powerhouse Celtic to link with the Fury in January 2009 but has been headhunted by the five-time European champions to become their new sports scientist.

"It's not every day you get offered a job at one of the most famous football clubs in the world and this opportunity is what dreams are made of," McCall said.

The North Queensland Fury will start their new Hyundai A-League season on a high following a deserved 1-0 win over Adelaide United at Townsville’s Brolga Park on Friday night.

Although the records will show a 30 metre screamer from second half substitute Adam Casey was the difference, the truth was the Fury dominated for large parts of the game and could have easily scored more with the amount of opportunities they created.

The lessons the squad took out of the Gold Coast defeat were evident; as a sharper, hungrier Fury side were on displayed in front of over 2,000 spectators including Federal Sports Minister, Kate Ellis. Leading by example, Simon Storey, Isaka Cernak and Jason Spagnuolo worked their socks off in both defence and attack, whilst in general the Fury bossed possession for extended periods of the first half and gave the opposition little time on the ball. The Fury’s passing was more precise and the pairing of David Williams and Chris Payne upfront caused the Adelaide defence all sorts of problems.

Yeah thats him. What a knob. Pity he doesnt spend as much time getting the ball as he does moisturising himself. The guy wouldnt get a kick at amateur level but thats ok as long as he looks the part.
