The BYE rounds!

Postby whufc » Thu Apr 19, 2012 2:07 pm

Just having a look at the 3 bye rounds in the middle of the year and my team is screwed LOL.

If i kept my current side over the 3 weeks im looking at playing with at least 2 donuts each round.

What are peoples strategies for this, do they think they will need all players to win games, use trades to make sure they have a full squad even if diminshes the side in the long haul, concede those three games in the hope of keeping trades and being strong at the end

Thoughts?

I'm contemplating writing one of the 3 rounds off and trying to win the other two, I'm still pondering the thought though.

My initial strategy was to write the one round off and with all the GWS rookies in it looked lopsided on the spreadsheet but I think with judicious trading as I go, I should be able to get through even that round with one or maybe 2 donuts. The other two rounds would be covered.

This will depend on the rookies coming through to downgrade to though. So I am still working with giving the free hit to Les in our match up but being competitive for the rest.

Out of contention for the major prize, i'm going to judge it in my opponents in each league and how badly I need wins in those particular leagues. May mean sacrificing one of those rounds to preserve trades, particularly if upgrades/downgrades are not ready.

Thats where my confusion comes from. Im sitting 106th overall so i still have that little dream inside of overrall glory. Under normal circumstances the two sides im playing this week average 1900 so i should have them covered BUT i want to maintain my overall position so thinking Martin needs to go out bring Sidebottom in. The two advantages are he is in better form, helps my side out come bye weeks disadvantages are Martin may GUN it very soon and i look the fool.

The way my team is now I'll be rooted in round 11.

I was going to try and get my side well balanced before then, but on looking at that I reckon writing off one round and going for the other two is probably the best bet.

At the moment I have a fairly even spread of players from clubs, Rd 11 would see atleast 3 doughnuts, just might sneak in with coverage in the other 2 rounds. Will assess it when it comes, might be able to tank a game

I read with interest on Impromptu's site(last years winner) about his trading strategy which dictates 3 trades in each of the bye weeks to get a minimum of 2 donuts. WTF.
While I believe he is screwed this year already, the strategy even for total points beggars belief? :o
What is the SA Footy community view on the extra trading for the byes and their plans?
I think he is focussing too much on the years anomaly and not on what works best?

I have mapped out a plan like Impromptu's mainly to verify what he is saying is true. That being that a minimum of two donuts is unavoidable. Even if you avoid donuts in rounds 11 and 12 you cannout avoid 2 in round 13. That's because you don't have enough trades to shift out your round 13 bye players that you had to have in your side to get through rounds 11 and 12.

Managing through the byes essentially involves having no more than 8 round 11 bye players in your team so you have no donuts in that round. Then in round 12 you upgrade your round 11 bye rookies to round 11 bye premiums. Then in round 13 you can upgrade to round 11 or round 12 premiums. Or you can sideways trade instead of upgrading.

I think the easiest approach is to mimimise the round 11 donut damage and take it from there.

Bye week round one (with current team): 1 WCE player, 5 GWS (on field), can sub (not trade) to get two donuts only, and preserve trades.
Bye week round two: 1 Collingwood, 1 Freo, 4 Geelong, 1 Melbourne, 1 Sydney, can sub to avoid any donuts (assuming my current GWS guys are playing)
Bye week round three: 2 Carlton, 1 GCS, 2 Hawthorn, 1 Richmond, 2 St Kilda, can sub to get just one donut.

Phew, you guys had me worried.

My plan is as follows - as at round 11 I will have 9 players from the group of teams having a bye that weekend (Adel/Bris/GWS/NM/WCE/Bull), 10 players from the group who have the bye in round 12 (Coll/Ess/Freo/Geel/Melb/Syd) and 11 from the group who have the bye in round 13 (Carl/GC/Haw/Port/Rich/StK).
This means in Round 11 I have 21 eligible players from group 2 and 3, then I trade two players from group 2 to group 1 so the balance will be 11/8/11. This means I have 22 eligible players in the second week of byes. Finally, I trade 2 players from group 3 to group 2 leaving a balance of 11/10/9 and 21 eligible players for the third round of the byes. Overall I get two donuts over the three weeks and burn 4 trades as long as I start with the 9/10/11 format. That's as close as I can get - of course injuries could still kill me but what can you do - any thoughts?

Round 11 I have 12 (including 6 GWS rookies)
Round 12 I have 9
Round 13 I have 9

I think by then I'll have better coverage as the GWS players start getting cashed in.

That looks to be a very well thought out strategy and given you are allowed 3 trades in each of these weeks you should be reasonably covered for injury as well. Just need to look out for the Super Coach Gods between now and then.
