Hogg Premier League Preview 2012
It’s that time of year again when I post my spectacularly unsuccessful Hogg Premier League preview. In the sixth season of Hogg Premier League we have a number of new teams due to Boxhead pulling the pin and the fact that leagues are now eighteen instead of sixteen.
The new teams in Hogg Premier League this season are
Halemhawks – Division I premiers 2011
Dutchys Dodos – Division I runners up 2011
Captain Who - Division I Preliminary Finalist 2011
Underdogs – Division I Preliminary Finalist 2011
MILLERS MOSQUITOES – Highest ranked Division I Semi Finalist 2011
Teams that are out of Premier League are
Boxhead United – Retired (16th in Hogg Premier 2011)
FOOTYLEDGENS – Relegated (13th in Hogg Premier 2011)
dunKsKrew – Relegated (15th in Hogg Premier 2011)
It’s normally good news when I write off your team as Browny found out last year. The teams are discussed in order of their 2011 points score. The only way I have a chance against most of these sides is to talk them up so here goes. (Premierships in brackets).
1. Darksiders SCE (2009, 2011)
The Dark Side will be once again the team to beat as he attempts to be the first Hogg Coach to win back to back Premier League titles. Darksiders is a team from the SCE League that was the number one ranked league in SuperCoach last season and he topped the overall Hogg rankings with The Honey Badgers last season. A highly prized scalp.
2. MILLERS MOSQUITOES
It was MILLERTIME for most of the year in Divvy I last year but when the finals came the Mozzies got sprayed. However, Boxhead did the Mozzies a big favour by buzzing off so this highly rated team now gets their chance in Hogg Premier. The Mozzies will be one of the teams to watch in this league even though Duncs reckon his mob should be in instead.
3. Underdogs
The Underdogs usually boast a formidable combination but somehow manage to remain under the radar despite some very consistent performances. Now that Gibbo has reached the Premier League that is perhaps no longer possible. The Darksiders might just have a fight on his hands with this somehow still unheralded side that racks up big scores regularly for fun.
4. Hondominators YSCC
Hondo is one of our better SuperCoaches here on safooty but the ultimate success has eluded him so far in the Premier League. Perhaps if he can avoid picking up an Andreis Everitt in the early rounds of the year he can once again become a real contender. It’s hard to imagine a top eight that does not have the dominators present.
5. Squeakeroos DTC
Squeaky is another top scoring coach but has a knock on his consistency so far. In his fourth Hogg season Squeakeroos DTC will be looking to follow up a good season with another for the first time. If he has a good year this year then his credentials are well established with three good years out of four but Squeaky will be one top end coach that others will be hoping to displace. Watch this space.
6. Captain Who?
After several years of consistently good SuperCoach the Captain gets a well deserved promotion into the Premier League and a finals spot would not surprise. However, past history shows that the Captain often goes down with the ship come finals time and with a step up in class this season then this could once again be the case.
7. Don’t Drop Catches
The team formerly known as Dusty Tunnels burrowed in fine style for his first Hogg Premier effort last season but ran out of hot air..I mean steam at the business end of the year. He will renew acquaintances with old time rival wycbloods (halemhawks) this year in what will one of many grudge matches in the Hogg Premier this season. I reckon he does a Richmond and finishes ninth. That’s what happens when you enter a head to head competition and think it’s all about overall rankings.
8. halemhawks
wycbloods changed their name to halemhawks perhaps because the bloods don’t win premierships. In 2011, wycbloods goal was to improve and make the top four of Division I but they went better than that by taking out the title. It would be a mighty achievement indeed for halemhawks to back up again and win the Hogg Premier flag after winning Division I the year before. So far this has not happened……yet.
9. Q Before You
The Q Man had an improved season last year after jumping out of the blocks but the run home wasn’t kind as his form fell away. A more conservative approach early on in the year could have the Q Man at the head of the Q this season. There will be plenty of good coaches though that won’t get warm this season in the Premier and Q Man could be one of them.
10. The Ginger Ninjas
Gingernuts is amongst the Ruck with a heap of coaches very evenly ranked about the middle of the Premier League seedings. The Ninjas got the hang of this game last season and I can see further improvement to come. He’ll need to as well to make the eight in this company but I believe that he can get the job done here. Now I’ve talked him up the Ninjas are bound to get the chop.
11. The Cat Empire
I’ve changed the name of my mob to try and hide from a grand final record that would make a Glenelg fan laugh. My Cats are still to break our flag drought but we do have a history of recording wins against higher ranked teams which is why we keep making unwinnable Grand Finals. If the Cats are to go one step better we must do better against our bogey sides such as Bluegunners and Hawkeye as well as having a few trades up the sleeve come finals time. I reckon this is the year I don’t come second which means I probably miss the eight.
12. Mr Football (2008)
Mr Football has been one of the most consistent coaches in Hogg history winning one premiership and being a contender in each season. However since his premiership year of 2008 he has yet to gain a foothold in the top four of this competition. Despite my almost annual efforts, Pup is not to be written off lightly and is another who will strongly challenge for the eight.
13. Woody's Dropkicks
The Dropkicks followed up two high scoring years of SuperCoach with quite an ordinary debut in Hogg Premier last season. Our league will be brutal if Woody can return to his best form. Not too sure where Woody went wrong last year but I certainly appreciated the late season win that’s for sure. We’ll just have to wait and see which Woody turns up but if the good Woody turns up that’s bad news for mid-rangers The Cat Empire, The Ginger Ninjas, Q Before You and Mr Football.
14. Dutchy’s Dodos
Talk about a sleeper this mob! In their first season they were awful and early on last year not much seemed to have changed but the Dutchman romped home to almost snaffle the Division I flag and earnt himself a Champions League berth in the process. This year Dutchy can’t afford such a slow start though as only eight out of eighteen will qualify so he’ll need to rack up more early wins. Previous history for the Dodos has shown that early season form is a rarity rather than the expectation so I reckon he’ll be a spectator come August.
15. chardy socialists
The chardies have been loveable losers in their Hogg Premier history but in reality are only a player or two away from being a gun side. If chardy can get the balance right the socialists could be sipping Champagne this year instead of the usual tipple. If he goes the other way then the annual relegation battle will be on again. Anything less than a top vintage will see him relegated to the cellar once again.
16. Hawkeye
In the past Hawkeye has been one to watch but according to the seedings he will be playing off in a relegation final this season but he’s a better coach than that. The writing was on the wall early for him last year when he finally lost to the REBCats for the first time and he never really recovered that extra four points and was always on the outer trying to crack into the eight. This season must be the year that Woggy starts to beat the top sides or he could well be a Division I coach next season.
17. Poon Army (2007)
The 2007 champ has gone from a walk up start to the top four in the early years of the Premier League to being right down the list and needing to extract the digit in order to remain in the top flight. Hammo, an Essendon man tends to get sucked in by half decent performances from flighty players such as Ryder and Hurley and he’s been caught out by Watson more than once as well. Hammo plays the percentages pretty well when it comes to trading up and down but he’s a tired fantasy player who will be out of Hogg Premier next season. A relegation monty and a genuine spoon chance.
18. Bluegunners
The Gunners have the same lengthy excuses book as CoverKing but doesn’t really have the same level of performance when he is on. In his inaugural Hogg Premier year of 2010 he had a pretty good season but he was nowhere near it last year. The Gunners avoided relegation last year and similar battle awaits this season. Like Poon Army, the coach appears to be ‘over’ fantasy footy and coaches who aren’t a hundred percent obsessed don’t stay in Hogg Premier – just ask the Cub (FOOTYLEDGENS).
Top Eight Predictions
1. Darksiders SCE
2. Hondominators YSCC
3. halemhawks
4. Underdogs
5. MILLERS MOSQUITOES
6. Captain Who?
7. Woodys Dropkicks
