Little article I've knocked up (all while I have two others I'm yet to start - and they have deadlines!).
BUBBLE BOYS
Trade season is in full swing now and with a number of rookies about to rise sharply in price, selecting those who'll play out most of the year will be vital.
CAM PEDERSON (BE -101): A ridiculous break-even that have tempted many to trade him in so far and may tempt more if he is selected again. Even if he scores only half of his current average in his next game, he will rise by almost $50K. The massive downside (and buyer beware) is that his job security seems very low and with the Roos posting a couple of wins recently, he may struggle to crack the senior side.
ISAAC SMITH (BE -89): Will be a very popular trade this week with his price set to skyrocket and his MPP eligibility providing coaches with flexibility within their team. The perception is that his job security will see him play several more games, however, I personally am getting Kayler-Thomson flashbacks. The Hawks need ruckmen and key defenders, but how badly do they need an outside runner with loopy kicks?
TOM LYNCH (BE -84): Won't be looked at this week because of the GCS bye, but will be a popular inclusion next week if he is selected. I haven't seen him in action, but with 19 marks and 4 goals from his two games, he could find a regular spot in the GCS forward setup. Small downside is his price tag - $138K is a little more than the other forwards on offer.
MATTHEW WATSON (BE -59): Hasn't played since Round 3 (vs Collingwood), but the consensus is he will play a few more games this year. KPP defenders tend to be low scorers, so I think that there are better options for a defensive downgrade this week and next week.
PAUL PUOPOLO (BE -57): Was on everyone's watchlist during the pre-season campaign, but we all had to wait until Round 7 to see him in action during season proper. Many have already traded him in on the back his strong showing in the NAB, but a leg injury suffered during Sunday's game may see him rested this week. There are some question marks over his JS, and if he sits out this week I wonder if he'll come back via the reserves.
MICHAEL HIBBERD (BE -55): Another who impressed during the NAB Cup and found his way into many teams at Round 1 lockout because of this. Hasn't looked like cementing a spot in Essendon's line-up, but a late withdrawal from Henry Slattery saw Hibberd get a surprise second game. Has MPP eligibility, which may or may not outweigh his lack of job security.
ARRYN SIPOSS (BE -45): I really like the look of this kid, has a good set of hands and looks composed in front of the big sticks. With St Kilda's season all but over, he will be given every opportunity to find his feet at the highest level. My pick of the week.
STEVEN MAY (BE -44): Haven't seen much of him, but I would think Lynch is higher in pecking order of GCS-bubble-boy-rookie-forwards.
SIMON PHILLIPS (BE -7): Gutsy player and Port need a bit of guts. Was sub in his first game, hence a low 2-game average. I think he can get himself a regular spot in Port's senior side, but his scoring potential is a little unknown and so won't be a popular pick.
BRYCE RETZLAFF (BE -3): Didn't do much in his first two games. With Jono Brown due back and McCauley waiting in the wings he'll probably find himself back in the reserves sooner rather than later.
NATHAN GORDON (BE -3): Has played the last two games, but I haven't got a good look at him. Wasn't in many coaching calculations prior to Round 1, so with an unknown JS and scoring potential he won't be a popular pick.
