2011 Hogg Shield Election

Hogg Shield Election

So far the Hogg Shield has pretty much been a dictatorship of the REB. The idea has been to create a series of leagues where the best players play up top and you play against other coaches that are just as good as you are.

The difference between the Hogg and say, the multidivisional system of Big Footy is that there is a promotional/relegation system in place. The idea of this is that you can build up rivalries with coaches you have been playing against for years. This is why there has been a two up and two down situation. I also thought it was a bit harsh to drop 25% of the league. Take the Squeakeroos for example. In 2009 they were a gun side, but he had a dodgy 2010 season but avoided relegation. This season they have returned to their 2009 ways. Did they really deserve to be relegated? Well, I say no but others in lower divisions might not agree.

I believe that the two up two down situation should remain for at least Premier League and Hogg Division I. These two leagues were the ones where it all started and I believe those coaches who have been in the Hogg for five years deserve a little more protection from relegation as a reward for their loyalty. Even with the influx of talented coaches into the lower grades these two leagues remain 1st and 2ND in the league rankings so the current model is working well with the aim of producing the most competitive leagues at the top end.

It starts to get a bit muddy from Div II onwards. Statistically there are more than a few coaches in Div II and Div III that are not ‘pulling their weight’. It will be from Div II down that the election proposals will effect the most.

The proposal is this

A – Leave the Hogg as it is
B - Include Division IV in the relegation/promotion zone with two up two down
C- Include Division IV in the relegation/promotion zone with four up four down from Div II to Div IV.
D - Have the entire Hogg as relegation/promotion with two up two down (excluding Premier and Div I)
E – Have the entire Hogg as relegation/promotion with four up four down (excluding Premier and Div I)

Any changes decided by the group to be implemented THIS SEASON. This election will remain open until Lockout of Round 7 so coaches can think about their strategy for the season.

regards,

REB

C

There are some high scoring coaches in the lower Divs so it makes sense to facilitate their movement up the ranks a little quicker so they get a shot at moving into Div 1.

So lets say for arguments sake that option C gets voted in then it will be the top 4 (total points) from the remaining leagues (V, VI & VII) that will get promoted?
Also then all teams in the leagues above will be promoted/relegated on league positions not total points?

Correct. Except Divvy V is a Hogg league in name only as it is our family league. No one gets demoted from the Piglet although some coaches have been promoted out of it (Hondo was the inagural winner).

If C gets up it will be Div IV out of the pool with the Top four going up to III at the expense of the bottom four of Division III. The bottom four from Division IV would end up in Division V at the expense of the four highest scorers in the remaining pool divisions.

Clear as mud.

Cheers REb just wanted to make sure I was looking at it correctly.
As I am one of the guys that will be still part of the pool divisions I will be voting for C to give myself the best chance to get out of the pool but still keeping it a contest to be a part of the divs that are decided by league postions.

But im not against having the pool.
This is my first year in the Hogg and from reading other posts there is more and more coaches joining each year so naturally I would think extending the amount of divisions that use relegation and promotion would come naturally but I dont think you should lose or move away from the concept that you have in place at the moment. Its what makes joining this comp different.

I voted E, would seem a bit easier to go up divisions than to be in a pool with other divisions to decide promotion. If my understanding is correct you'd have to finish top 4 in your division for promotion as opposed to highest ranking points accross several divisions for promotion. Saying that as a newbie I'm enjoying the concept as is and am not really to fussed if it changes or stays the same.

Keep up the good work, REB

i like the top 4 promotion and bottom 4 relegation system but i set my team up to get max points throughout the whole season so this could hurt me  trade trade trade i guess lol

Lol, don't we all

to put it a bit clearer i selected fewer melb, syd, bris and frem players to avoid having too many players on the bench during the bye and hence help my overall points. Whereas in AFL DT where i am aiming to win the league i have selected all those players like, cox, darling, sandilands, pav, broughton, lower, palmer, grimes, tapscott, goodes, okeefe ( i think that is all of them lol) because you have a bye when there is an AFL bye so all these players will play the whole DT season bar injury :)

I'll be pissed if I finish top 4 in points but not make the top 4 ladder in div IV! Why are we changing the rules now?

"If C gets up it will be Div IV out of the pool with the Top four going up to III at the expense of the bottom four of Division III"

This will be in points mate, i.e. no change of the rules, merely a much bigger chance of going up.

I voted for the last option but I reckon it should only come in next season.

As Mythical Creature pointed out we may have 18-team leagues next year which will turn the promotion/relegation upside down anyway.

i think you do a great job REB but its hard because me personally after being 1-2 in div 3 im going for the win in the division not ranked points ill be setting my side up for finals not going out with trade for weeks..

but i do like the bottom 4 go down and the top four go up (league ladder) and the newbies start from scratch unless maybe they can email you there year before final scores

My first year, and it's been a huge failure so far, so I'm keen to leave it as it is... I think I'm in the lowest Divvy, and a few flukey wins could see me go up where I don't belong if it gets tweaked...?
