Tactics

REB touched on a couple things that might be handy helpers this year. I know people might be a bit reluctant to give to many tips away, but for those without the time to study the changes to much this year I was hoping there would be some helpers out there.

The fixture may be the most important tool this year. As pointed out by REB, Carlton have the bye later in the year, meaning Judd, Carrazzo, Gibbs etc wont be available to teams in the prelims (I think it was this week), meaning trades will need to be calculated early on to allow for player replacements from original squad. For example, if Essendon have the bye in week 2 of finals and Carlton are the following week, coaches will need to allow x amount of trades for week 2 depending on how may Essendon players they have and x amounts of trades for week 3 for Carlton trades. This is assuming you keep your original starters such as Judd and Stanton until this time.

A question for anyone. Do we all have a bye from interleague games when 3 teams have a bye? From the fixture I believe Brisbane and Sydney are the only teams that have the bye twice when there are 3 teams having a bye (hope that makes sense) so I would assume these teams would be best to pick players from as you will never score a 0 in your league for a player from one of these teams unlike Port, who have both of their byes '1 out'.

Correct. There are no league H2H matches during the multi-team bye rounds, however, scores are included in the overall competition standings.

There's something else you need to think about as well. If you are in the pool leagues and want to qualify for the promotion/relegation leagues in the next season you have to approach the season from an 'overall' point of view rather than from a league win point of view.

League win means stacking up on those teams not effected by the byes and overall requires having some coverage even during those weeks when the league matches are suspended. It doesn't matter if you are the Bunny Bowl premier and eight coaches are ahead of you because you'll still end up in the pool due to overall rankings.

Sightly related, but is anyone making up separate teams to try and win the $1000 cash in the multi-team bye rounds?

Just picked my team and it took me 15 minutes. That's probably why I suck at Supercoach. No doubt will make 100 changes before the season starts.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep

No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

My tip is research the rookies. Getting your rookies right is crucial to how your season will go

My tip is watch out for players who have been playing for years and cost 300k. Trying to predict when such a player might have a break out season is one of the toughest things to do. High reward but high risk. If you must pick a 330ker probably limit it to just the one player IMO.

Yes, good article on TooSerious regarding the mid-pricer strategy. Very hit and miss (Ben Warren 2010 anyone? ).

Last year had lots of examples of the downside of that $300K price range - Dangerfield, Ziebell, Medhurst, Warren

That price is OK only if there is an injury discount such as Malceski last year.

I always say otherwise unless you sit in on training sesssions and have inside information on a certain $300K player then stay away

I got burnt by several last year. Mostly Crows. (Vince, Dangerfield, McKay). Reluctant to chance it this year, but I might slip one might sneak into the midfield and one in defence - perhaps.

I'm contemplating riding the Dangerfield train again this year. Should get a greater run in the midfield with Goodwin gone.

Yes, he and Higgins are on my radar. I've had Higgins the last two seasons and figure if I don't pick him he'll probably have a blinder season.

You're just trying to convince REB to get rid of him so he plays a blinder year and you can reap the rewards

meanwhile if you do move him on REB, let me know, i may just have to bring him in ;)
