Starting Midfield Structure

How are you planning on structuring your starting midfield?
Assume of course that we will all start with three rookies on the bench, how many premiums, mid-pricers, and rookies are you looking at.
I'm currently playing around with 3 premiums and 3 rookies for my starting 6. However, I've got one eye on either Foley or L Anthony to replace one of the rookies, only it means I need to take cash from elsewhere.
Starting three rookies may mean dropping points (and a league game or two early), but the long-term benefits could outweight the initial security of including mid pricers.

How much is a Premium? and a mid-pricer?
Dream Team - I have 6 in the $300 -$399 range (D.Thomas, J.Corey, T.Scully, B.Johnson, A.Davey & T.Cotchin), 3 under $200 (Kerr, Swallow, Krakouer)
Don't have a single player above $400 (D.Thomas highest @ $395)

4 premiums.. Judd, Jobe Watson, Boyd, Selwood then the rest rookies.
Making sure i have good MPP cover also

I'm not sure how you would classify them in DT as the prices are lower than in SC.
For SC:
Premium $450K+
Middy $190-$450K
Rookie <$190K

Kerr doesn't have age on his side, but maybe wait on his performance in the NAB Cup. Probably no less risky than someone like Foley though.

For SuperCoach this year I am avoiding any player that costs 300k. Players in this price range have burnt me badly over the years. Premiums/Rookie with a few improvers is the way to go IMO.

Kerr and to a lesser extent Foley are exactly the type of players I was referring to above. Kerr's numbers have declined significantly since the departure of of Judd and Cousins and if you are looking at an option in the Eagles midfield I'd look at the rookie Gaff or Luke Shuey who is one player I am very keen on this year. I reckon Shuey will get games ahead of Gaff and will be a higher point scorer when he does play.
Kerr has more than one issue which makes him a no for me. Firstly he doesn't cope with a tag that well. Then he has a poor durability factor. Add to that the dick always gets suspended because his ego can't handle the fact that he is no longer elite. Kerr is SuperCoach cancer and I am the....what cures Cancer?

I stayed away from Kerr, he proved last year before he got injured he was having trouble shaking a tag and since Cousins and Judd have left he has been the main midfielder, apart from Priddis. Out of the 2 I would lean towards Foley as Richmond have more players before him that would take a tag. IMO!

REB, on one hand your keen on Shuey ($323K), but then say you want to avoid the $300K players???
Anyway, I agree with you, at this stage I'm treating those mid-pricers like the plague.

Not sold on Foley's durability either but he's a much better bet than Kerr. Have a good look at the midfield options. There are so many good ones that I'm not sure why Foley is on the radar of so many coaches. You can pick up players who will get games that will cost you less than Foley. It's been a few years since he really racked up the numbers.

At 323 Shuey is probably a no for me. On Fanplanner his price was much less. I swapped him out for a ridiculously underpriced player who I believe will be the cash cow of the year in midfield.

I currently have 3 premiums and 3 starting rookies but I may go to 4 and 2
It's hard at this stage because we haven't seen how the rookies look. I'll let that decide whether I start 3 rookies in my midfield or put them elsewhere. I have seen teams with 5 keepers starting in their midfield. It all depends on those rookies.
Last year I started only 2 premiums and 4 rookies and I think it worked OK. My problems early were in my forward line. There's a poster on BigFooty who finished 723 last year and started 6 midfield rookies!

No premiums at all. This year he has announced a no-Goddard, no-Ablett, no-Swan policy. Classic.

There's a pretty good article on tooserious about this. It says 3 and 3 is a risky approach. My 5 and 1 is not even mentioned and that's the way I like it.

Thanks REB - I just read that article. High risk / high reward!!
We'll see how I end up by lockout.
Our structures may well be very similar if you have Didak, Gibbs or other MPP premiums as part of your 5 midfield premium starters. I have put those type of guys back in defence and forward for now.

The premium's prices do not vary that much, so therefore if you reserve enough money and you are fortunate with the rookies that you pick you are destined for higher honours.
The first couple of steps you take are critical, get it wrong and you are chasing all season.
