Player discussion 2010

Postby Hondo » Wed Mar 03, 2010 2:04 pm

I thought we could share some thoughts on specific players to help us build our squads.

I hope Dutchy read this post (or any NM fan) because I have a specific interest in the prospects this year of:

- Matt Campbell
- Jack Ziebell
- Levi Greenwood
- Ben Warren

I think there's good upside in them but would appreciate a second opinion from someone closer to the action.

Dutchy I aint but I reckon there is a significant upside in all of those players as well as Liam Anthony, Todd Goldstein and Sam Wright I think his name is, the one who looks a bit like Dale Thomas.

I reckon some guys like Hale and Corey Jones might be on the way out and the jury might be out on Edwards as well. Warren and Wright could gain signficantly if Hale and Jones go by the wayside and I reckon Goldstein could gain a significant improvement in his numbers this season. Levi Greenwood is their number one tagger I believe so while he won't get Liam Anthony's numbers he is over half the price and a very attractive option if you don't fancy relying on guys who are coming back from serious injury (Ladson, Hunt) or haven't played in a while like Kennelly.

Campbell looks to have a massive upside but I reckon Warren's ceiling might be a little low but he will make a good cash cow. Ziebell's ability to win contested ball and his MPP eligibility make him worth looking at as well.

North, along with Freo and Port look to have some real nuggets as far as SC goes.

The player I am looking at in terms of upside is Port's Justin Westhoff. Westhoff had an impressive first year but has treaded water ever since. So far in the NAB, Port have run him up forward and a little in the ruck so with this added versatility as well as another pre-season under the belt makes him an attractive prospect. This could be Westhoff's year.

What do you guys think, especially Power fans? Worth a gamble at 313?

I think he may be worth a gamble, maybe.

It looks like Williams may use him as more of a flanker, who may be a difficult match up. IF he plays this role, instead of a key post he could have the ability to get a number of touches, and i think he usually uses the ball well. Worth considering.

I looked closely at Westhoff last year after a great pre-season and then he tapered off and got injured. At $313K though he could be a good pick. I'll let any Port fans comment better.

While they are at it what about:

- Daniel Stewart
- Paul Stewart
- Robbie Gray
- Mitch Banner
- Matthew Lobbe
- Jackson Trengove

I agree REB - NM, Freo and PA have the most enticing mid-price options with good potential upside.

Totally agree with you REB looks like port are going to use him as a ruckrover this year, giving him a license to run, he takes a good mark, good skills and kicks a good goal, westhoff, banner and krakouer are ports bests prospects.

Everytime chocco is on the radio he also pumping up young Hitchcock from Glenelg, and after bagging 3 on the weekend he may worth a punt. Is he a rookie?

REB, what do you think about Mitch Duncan? Any remote chance he could play early on?

He's a dual position player hence my extra interest in him.

Duncan will be a gun no doubt about it but I reckon he won't play many or even any matches for the Cats this season. Still, his MPP elgibility means you could chuck him on the bench as long as you have a Higgins/Harvey type in midfield and you've loaded up on the midfield young guns. You could then put Mitch to the mids bench and bring in Higgins or Harvey or equivalent. This means Duncan will provide something to your team whether he plays or not. Look for him to go past players like Nathan Djekerra (how do you spell THAT?) this season.

If what you want is a cash cow off the rookie list who might get at least three games maybe Pods is a better bet as he will be elevated to the list due to Mitch Brown's leg problems. That means you don't have to put a Harvey/Higgins into your midfield and maybe slot in a Mid/Defender instead such as Mitch Farmer who will probably get more games than Duncan and Pods combined.

My cheapo's for the year (DT <250k):
Defenders:
Clancee Pearce - looking very good in nab cup and should cement a spot. Very underrated.
Nick Malceski - Taking a risk with him but hopefully can recapture 08 form.
Rick Ladson - Gun and will be worth the 180k.
Josh Hunt - stays fit and will stay in the side.

Mids:
Dustin Martin - Richmond need him and so do i

Rucks:
Hille and Seaby are both worth the under 250k price tag

Fwds:
Dangerfield - not expect massive numbers from him but in the fwds there aint many better options.
Gary Rohan - Looks a gem and should stay in sydneys best 22

Bench:
Beau Waters - back from injury and is in the best 22 at WC
Matt Maguire - Surely Brisbane play him

Michael Barlow - Nab cup form looks awesome.
Lewis Jetta - Hoping he will be my cash cow for the year

Robbie Warnock - Will play every game if available
Jordan Roughead - Another that should get regular games

Tom Rockliff - Nab cup form is good, looks to be a really good pickup
Cameron Hitchcock - Will be ports elevated rookie and should play a few games, look for a skyrocketing price :)

Good player, but notoriously bad scorer in DT Groover. Better options out there than him.

well i like a lot of this Groover, considering you were in the last 256 IIRC of the eliminator comp, you must have some idea. my cheapies are;

Def
Malceski, Schofiled, Ladson, Hunt
Bench of M Farmer and Waters

Mids
Greenwood
Bench of Martin and Jetta

Rucks
Nic Nat
Bench of Vickery and J Roughead

Fwds
Ballantyne, Campbell
Bench of Rohan and Rockliff

i then have
4 from $250K-$300K
4 from $300K-$400K
6 $400K+

looking for a better more consistent year this year, and hopefully i can get my strategy right and not have to make 10 trades in the the first 5 rounds due to injury!!!

Paul Roos said earlier in the year that Gary Rohan wouldn't be getting too many games so I'd be wary of selecting him. I'm not sold on Hitchcock either, this time last year lots of people wanted to jump on Wade Thompson and look how that turned out. Come to think of it Thompson>Hitchcock, at least for FF purposes in 2010.

The problem with Hitchcock is that as I heard it Rodan needs to come off the LTI after round 2 so whoever the Power promote to the senior list will have a shortlived stay and then drop back not to get another chance (barring another LTI) until the round 11 cut-over point for rookie promotions.

That's as I heard it anyway. Anyone else know?

Nuggety, you reckon Roughhead will get games for the Bulldogs? What about Minson?

Rhys Palmer won't play round one and is more of a DT option than a SC option as he burns the ball horribly. I wouldn't have him in my initial squad of either comp and would not contemplate for SC purposes, even though he helped me greatly during his rookie season.

I think Masten would be a better option than Palmer this year

Or even Brad Ebert. Although both butcher the ball a bit apparently.

At this stage I'm not picking any midfielders in this price range but we'll see.
