The Run Home Round 16

Usually when you write one of these things, the teams that can still make the eight start to drop off but there is a lot of fight in most of the teams outside the top eight as Longwood Lions, REBCats and especially The Spuds refuse to go quietly.

1. Captain Who 44 (chardy socialists, Darksiders SCE)
The Captain is looking good for a successful premiership defence and remains on top of the ladder for another week. This week they will clean up the relegated chardies and should earn himself the minor premiership and a first up final against Hondo’s Texans.

2. Poon Army 44 ( Underdogs, Cork in the Ocean)
Poony had no difficulty disposing of a faltering Hawkeye last week but faces much tougher opposition in the last two matches in the form of Underdogs and Cork in the Ocean. Troy will need to win one or maybe both matches to keep the double chance. I reckon Poon Army are pretenders and they won’t win another match all year.

3. Texas Danger SSC 40 (Longwood Lions, Buddyroughhawks)
The Texans have been less than impressive in recent weeks and they face a tough match against the Longwood Lions this week. On recent form you’d have to select the Lions given that the Texans only just got by the struggling Ginger Ninjas. I reckon Hondo will beat Buddy though and finish on eleven wins for the year.

4. Q Before You 40 (The Ginger Ninjas, Longwood Lions)
Q can go on an win both of these matches although the match against the Lions will be a tough one. Any team hoping to win this year’s Hogg Premier title will be hoping someone like the REBCats or MILLERS MOSQUITOES can get in ahead of the Lions who have a premiership winning history and plenty of trades to boot.

5. Darksiders SCE 36 (Spuds, Captain Who)
All weekend it looked like the Darksiders had dropped their match against Dutchy but somehow the two time HPL champs won the day to keep their top eight hopes alive and well. Rube only needs one more win to make the eight and the more likely win is to be against the Spuds but the Spuds just won’t go away so the Darkside is not safe just yet.

6. Underdogs 36 (Poon Army, MILLER MOSQUITOES)
There is plenty of fight in the Underdogs as they cleaned up Richo easily last week. The growling beast that is Gibbo now has her sights set on the Poon Army and I’m quite bullish about the Dogs making the top four. I reckon they’ll win both matches and steal Poony’s top four place.

7. Cork in the Ocean 36 (Hawkeye, Poon Army)
There was no shame in losing to Q Before You and Corky will seal the deal with two straight wins to make the finals. They’ll beat Woggy fairly easily and should salute in a tighter match against the Army. Corky is finals bound after missing out last year.

8. Buddyroughhawks 36 (Squeakeroos DTC, Texas Danger SSC)
Buddyroughhawks has missed the chance to put the Darksiders and the REBCats away and they now need to win against Squeaky to make the finals. I can’t see Buddy beating the Texans so if they don’t beat Squeaky this week they could be sitting in the stands with Woggy come August. I’m hoping for a Squeaky win but the smart money would be on Buddy this week anyway.

9. Hawkeye 32 (Cork in the Ocean, The Ginger Ninjas)
Woggy is done like a dinner this year and won’t beat Corky. An upset win would really open things up as far as the finals go but I can’t see Hawkeye getting the numbers against a fairly strong Corky combination. Woggy will go on and beat Gingernuts in the last game so tis week’s game against Cork in the Ocean is massive for Woggy. He won’t win it.

10. Longwood Lions 32 (Texas Danger SSC, Q Before You)
The Lions remain the team on the outside that might sneak in and wreak havoc next month in the finals. After winning two premierships last year Alaska will make Hogg history if he can win the Premier League title as that would give him a Hogg Champions League, Hogg Premier and Hogg Division I hat trick. The two teams that can stop that sort of shit before it starts are two of the best teams in the league, Texans and Q Man. If Lions beat both I reckon it might be a Lions v Captain Grand Final. A massive fortnight for Alaska.

11. REBCats 28 (Dutchys Dodos, Spuds)
The REBCats have had issues with injury and suspension but has remained in the hunt after defeating Buddy last week. Consistent scoring is not normally a characteristic of the Cats but in my best year of scoring I’m likely to miss the HPL finals for the first time. All of the teams on seven wins are very much a longshot but the REBCats at least has the percentage advantage…not that it will do any good.

12. Spuds 28 (Darksiders SCE, REBCats)
The Spuds have been massive in recent weeks and are in real form at the moment. They need teams like Buddy and Darksiders to cease winning and they need to beat the Darksiders and REBCats to get in. All of a sudden this scenario is starting to seem possible. In current form the Spuds would start favourite in both and both of their last two matches may well be play-off games.

13. MILLER MOSQUITOES 28 (Richo Richo Man, Underdogs)
MILLERS are almost gone and will need to defeat Richo this week to be any chance as they have a tough match against Underdogs to finish the season. Even then they will be relying on other results. MILLERS best has been brilliant but the gap between his best and worst sees him out of the eight and he’ll probably finish around 12th.

14. Richo Richo Man 28 (MILLER MOSQUITOES, chardy socialists)
Richo was never in the hunt against Gibbo last week and needs to defeat MILLERS and gain some percentage to be any chance of making the finals again. The right results might work but he needs too many things to go right before he can make the finals. CoverKing hasn’t done enough over the journey to take advantage of playing the bottom side in the last round.

Prediction

1. Captain Who 52
2. Q Before You 48
3. Texas Danger SSC 44
4. Underdogs 44
5. Cork in the Ocean 44
6. Poon Army 44
7. Darksiders SCE 40
8. Buddyroughhawks 40

Woggy has thrown a spanner in the works when it comes to Premier League finals calculations when they upset Cork in the Ocean to sneak into ninth spot. All of a sudden Hawkeye could sneak in after looking like a lame duck team for several weeks. Poon Army suffered a close loss at the hands of the Underdogs who booked their finals place with a 23 point win over the former ladder leader. The other team to book their finals place was Buddyroughhawks who finally got that big score he has been looking for in the last few weeks to spank an unlucky Squeakroos who keep scoring points but can't get the Ws on the board.

Teams in the eight that didn't get the job done were Corky as seen above and Darksiders who put in a lacklusture performance against Spuds who are trying to sneak in via the back door. MILLER MOSQUITOES and the REBCats also kept their season alive and both sides would have heaved a sigh of relief as Alaska's Longwood Lions lost their match to the Texans by a mere 14 points. There might be some top eight teams who will be thanking Hondo for that result. MILLERS win means that it is curtains for Richo Richo this season and he's put in a bit of a shitter in comparison to past efforts but he's done enough to be back in the Premier League next season.

With percentage being the way it is you'd have to back the teams currently inside the eight to remain there this time next weekend. The most vulnerable side is Cork in the Ocean who could be knocked out if they can't defeat an out of form Poon Army. Hawkeye has cellar dweller Ginger Ninjas in the last round and MILLERS, Spuds, Longwood Lions and the REBCats don't have fixtures that look like percentage boosters so it looks all over for them as well.

Congratulations Hondo another close one throughout the weekend but your turn and I take it on the chin. I zigged when I should have zagged a number of times this season and it has paid the price. I hope you go on for Premier League success this year, but you may need to look at your ruck division to beat Q.

The Run Home Round 17

The only team that exited last week was Richo Richo Man whose pretty ordinary season ended with a whimper at the hands of MILLERS MOSQUITOES. With one round left to play there are 13 sides that could possibly play finals this year. That is a pretty fair indication of just how tight this league has been this season, a year that has proven to be the best Hogg Premier League season in terms of overall rankings. Wins in bold.

1. Captain Who 48 (Darksiders SCE)
Another week on top of the ladder and this week they have a chance to make a big statement in Hogg Premier League. Throughout the history of this league the Darksiders has been the best team in it. If the Captain can win this week (and I think he will), it will be a symbolic changing of the guard. The Darksiders are the only team to win the Hogg twice but the mighty Captain is looking at going back to back.

2. Q Before You 44 ( Longwood Lions)
Q Man has an excellent squad this season and has trades up his sleeves unless he is wearing a singlet this week. The Q Man is looking good for a Grand Final rematch against Groover and he'd be pretty keen to have his revenge and get some Hogg glory. First up though he has to get by the formidable Longwood Lions who are still a good side even though last season's glory appears to have eluded Alaska's boys.

3. Texas Danger SSC 44 (Buddyroughhawks)
Hondo has gone about his business efficiently this season and will defeat Buddyroughhawks and earn the double chance and a huge final against Q Before You looms next week. With Poony looking wonky I reckon the Texans can win the double chance even if they lose to wycbloods unless the roughhawks absolutely pound the Texans which doesn't look likely to me.

4. Poon Army 44 (Cork in the Ocean)
Poony's recent form has been on the nose and he needs to pull out all the stops to hang on to the double chance as the Underdogs are nipping at the Army's heels. I reckon Corky will take out Troy and I stand by my Lemming prediction for the Poon Army this season and that will be a result that won't be giving me any joy at all because I need Corky to lose. :(

5. Underdogs 40 (MILLER MOSQUITOES)
The Underdogs are looking pretty good right now and I reckon they can pinch the Poon Army's top four spot. MILLERS will provide strong opposition as they usually do but I reckon Gibbo will get the double chance.

6. Buddyroughhawks 40(Texas Danger SSC)
wycbloods has qualified for his first ever Hogg Premier League finals series but won't get any joy against the Texans this week although on their day the roughys can beat anyone.

7. Darksiders SCE 36 (Captain Who?)
The Darksiders will be fighting for their lives and they have to defeat the reigning premiers in order to make the finals. It will be a massive fall from grace for the mighty Darksiders who have scored really well this year which is usual but have not been able to win matches which is not. It's all over I reckon for Rube.

8. Cork in the Ocean 36 (Poon Army)
I believe that Corky will shut the door on the rest of us by beating the Poon Army and move ahead of the Darksiders. This will mean a first up final against Buddyroughhawks in what should be a very good knock out final.

9. Hawkeye 36 (The Ginger Ninjas)
Woggy won't like reading this preview as I am tipping him to beat the Ninjas and sneak into the top eight. The Wog will have done well to get ten wins and if he can he's a deserving finalist.

10. REBCats 32 (Spuds)
This year has been a massive tease for the REBCats but at the moment the Spuds are in better form and I reckon I'll get better draft picks than him next season.

11. MILLER MOSQUITOES 32 (Underdogs)
The MILLERS need to beat in form Underdogs and hope that Poon wins and Hawkeye and REBCats lose. Not looking likely but I'm probably going to do my part.

12. Spuds 32 (REBCats)
Where has this recent burst of form been all year for the Spuds? They have been on fire in recent weeks and it would be a Houdini-like effort if they were to pinch eighth spot from where they were. They'll beat my mob I reckon but Poony's poor form could be the death knell on a mighty late season come back.

13. Longwood Lions 32 (Q Before You)
Alaska has not been able to keep that late season winning streak going and things don't get any easier against Q Before You this week. I reckon he gets rolled again and he'll be plotting the downfall of us all in 2014.

Prediction

1. Captain Who 52
2. Q Before You 48
3. Texas Danger SSC 48
4. Underdogs 44
5. Poon Army 44
6. Buddyroughhawks 44
7. Cork in the Ocean 40
8. Hawkeye 40

Hawkeye has swooped on a finals place after Corky failed to defeat the Poon Army in the last round. Woggy started the season well but fell off the pace but unlike last season they found some late form to qualify for finals action. It was all too little too late for the REBCats who won four of their last five to miss out on the finals on percentage to the Darksiders who have outscored the REBCats all season and are deserved finalists.

Captain Who has won the minor premiership but might not be all that happy about having to play against the league's highest scoring team in their qualifying final next week as the Poon Army snuck ahead of the Texans. Gibbo got rolled and missed out on the double chance and now has a tough first up final against the Darksiders who are due for a win and have shown they can still score big. Congratulations to wycbloods who have made the Hogg Premier finals for the first time the only newbie to the ranks and they will start favourites against Hawkeye in their knock out final.

Teams in red are relegated and Dutchys Dodos and the chardies have known their fate for some weeks now. The chardies 2013 season sees the end of their five season involvement in the Premier League and their score this week seems to be a WTF moment. Dutchys Dodos will return to Division I after playing the last two seasons in the the Premier League.

All looks set for a cracking finals series next week with plenty of gun teams lining up for the title. Well done lads...and Gibbo. ;)
