Round 7 Previews

Poon Army v REBCats

My work mate and fellow original Hogger Poon Army is having his best season since his premiership winning year of 2007 and my REBCats will have a hard time trying to knock him off this week. Things are so desperate in the REBCats’ camp that we are anxiously awaiting the return of Bryce Squibbs which is looking more and more unlikely as the weeks drag on. REBCats aren’t travelling well enough to prevent a Poon Army victory alas.

Buddyroughhawks v Dutchy’s Dodos

Buddy has been a bit unlucky in recent rounds but I reckon they are good things this week against Dutchy who really spudded it up badly last week. While I’m sure that the Dodos can fly a bit higher than last week I can’t see them winning this one and it’s a Buddyroughhawks win coming up for wycbloods.

Darksiders SCE v Squeakeroos DTC

The power of the Dark Side has become evident in recent weeks as Rueben is getting a real run on now. The team with the best overall Hogg Premier record faces a more difficult assignment this week than last as they face a Squeakeroos combination that is desperate for a win after some recent disappointments. While Squeaky is quite capable of the upset, the smart money is on Darksiders SCE to win.

Longwood Lions v Spuds

The Lions hefty reputation goes on the line against a team in the Spuds who know just how well Alaska can play this game. The last time these two sides met was in the Division I grand final last year and the Spuds have an excellent chance to avenge that loss and put a big dent in the Lions’ season. I’m tipping the Spuds to do just that and loosen the wheel nuts of the wobbly Longwood Lions bandwagon.

chardy socialists v Texas Danger SSC

The chards were very unlucky not to open their account last week and despite remaining winless so far this season they are certainly not this year’s version of BlueGunners. The socialists just need a tweak or two of their combination and it will soon start returning some good scores. The Texans have gone a little off the boil in recent weeks since staggering over the line against Richo in Round 5 and I reckon that chardy socialists can win this and get the upset.

The Ginger Ninjas v Captain Who?

The Ninjas appeared to be back in town a week ago but turned in an awful score to lose another match last week and they remain anchored in the relegation zone with one win in six matches. I can’t see Gingernuts getting any joy this week either up against the defending Champions and it’s a Captain Who victory coming up in this one I reckon.

MILLER MOSQUITOES v Q Before You Match of the Round

Both of these teams had an excellent season last year before spudding it up early this year. In the last couple of weeks though both sides have been scoring very well making this game the Match of the Round. The winner of this match will get a real march on their opponent while the loser will get bogged down in the wrong half of the table. In the toughest match of the round to tip I’m selecting Q Before You to get the win in what should be a high scoring match.

Cork in the Ocean v Richo Richo Man

The Richos got back some scoring form last week without getting a win while Corky has been like most of us, struggling for consistency in what is a very even league. In another toss of the coin job I’m tipping Richo Richo Man to end his run of outs because his team isn’t that bad so they are due for a win. Corky has every chance but I just get the feeling that CoverKing is about to win one.

Underdogs v Hawkeye

Both teams have been scoring very well this season even though Underdogs have given BJ Goddard the big miss this season. Hawkeye has once again loaded up on his favourite team and a lot will depend on the selection strategies employed by Clarkson and his match committee for the Suns match. I reckon some key Hawkers will have a rest which would be curtains for Hawkeye. Much to Woggy’s delight I am selecting the Underdogs.

Normally in Hogg Premier League the final eight is decided only in the last round or the second last round but this season could turn out to be different. I reckon as many as seven of the teams currently in the top eight will stay there after several authoratitive performances in the same round. Hammo's devious use of the lockout gave him the edge in his clash with my REBCats and he remains on top of the ladder. The Darksiders look the goods as usual and the reigning premier Captain Who isn't far behind.

Hondo's Texans, Longwood Lions and Cork in the Ocean all scored well and scored important wins. The Spuds were very unlucky to lose their match but their scoring patterns this season suggests that August action is on the agenda. Several of the beaten teams this week just don't look like challenging this season with the possible exception of MILLERS MOSQUITOES. Buddyroughhawks will be looking to get into the eight but Q Before You looks the most likely to snaffle that last spot at the expense of Woggy's Hawkeye who continue to rack up arsey wins with bullshit scores. Not that I'm jealous mind you.

Speaking of bullshit scores Gingernuts put in a pitiful 1637 that has most of us stragglers anxiously looking at the fixture to see when we play the Ninjas. The chardies dropped thier seventh straight match and look to be more trouble than the early settlers and Richo Richo and Dutchy are also starting to struggle badly. Early favourites for the drop are chardies and the Ninjas but Dutchy and CoverKing only have a one match buffer on the Ninjas but I reckon they are a monty to go down and that the chardies are more likely to threaten those just outside the relegation zone.

Round 8 Previews

Dutchys Dodos v Poon Army

League leaders Poon Army have got a very strong squad at the moment as I found out last week. Dutchy is starting to struggle to rack up competitive scores so it is hard to see the Dodos knocking the Army off the top of the ladder. Poon Army should win this one fairly comfortably.

REBCats v Squeakeroos

Both sides have the potential to score large scores but are littered with non-performers that need to be culled in the bye period. Squeaky appears to have a higher ceiling but the loss of Ellis to the Squeakeroos backline weakens his weakest area. If Shaw can get off his butt and actually play the REBCats will win it.

Buddyroughhawks v Spuds

The Spuds copped a high scoring loss last week and the roughies had a win that kept them outside of the top eight on percentage. Buddyroughhawks appears to have his work cut out for him though as he takes on Spuddy snarling after the loss. I reckon Spuds can rebound and grab the win and keep the roughies out of the top eight for another week.

Darksiders SCE v Texas Danger SSC

Darksiders are in top form after a slow start to the season while the Texans have rebounded after a recent speed hump to lock in a top four spot after seven rounds. I keep tipping against the Texans for some reason but I feel justified in doing so this week against one of the form teams of the competition. The Texans will put up a top notch performance in this match but I can still see a Darksiders SCE victory in what should be a cracker.

Longwood Lions v Captain Who? Match of the Round

In another top quality clash the winners of the top three grades in the Hogg last season are playing off in a match worthy of match of the round status. Both sides are going well again this season even though Alaska’s scoring patterns are a little down in comparison to the Captain. Both players are masters of the head to head game so I’ll be keeping a close eye on this match as it unfolds. I reckon that Captain Who will win this one but it really is a toss of the coin job.

chardy socialists v Q Before You

Q Man has now won four on the trot but due to his poor start to the year Q is still not in the top eight. I reckon that Q Before You will win this match pretty easily though and be in the top eight this time next week. The chardies aren’t going as bad as a Dutchy or Gingernuts but don’t have a victory to show for their efforts. The breakthrough is coming but it won’t be against Q.

The Ginger Ninjas v Richo Richo Man

A pessimistic CoverKing has been muttering the word relegation and if he can’t beat a struggling Ginger Ninjas outfit then we’ll have to send out a search party on this forum to find him. The Ninjas put in one of the worst Premier League scores on a non-bye week since BlueGunners spent all of last season spudding it up. Ginge is better than that and will score more this week but for mine it’s a much needed Richo Richo man victory.

MILLER MOSQUITOES v Hawkeye

Hawkeye isn’t scoring as much as MILLER MOSQUITOES yet it is Woggy’s boys who are sitting in the top eight with MILLERS down there with the also rans. MILLER lost an important match against Q Man last week and needs a win over a top eight opponent to be thrown a lifeline this season. I reckon Hawkeye is that lifeline and with the Mozzies appearing to have a bit more scoring potential , that MILLER MOSQUITOES will go on and record a win.

Cork in the Ocean v Underdogs

It is a rare sight indeed to see Underdogs struggling in any Hogg league but they are starting to lose traction in Hogg Premier (I know how they feel!). Underdogs dipped below 2100 last week and they’ll need to score more than that to defeat Cork in the Ocean who is having a much better season this year than last. With the Dogs heading South and Corky on the rise I’m tipping Cork in the Ocean to win and continue the trend.

If I didn't hate Clarko before I do now. I've been carrying Hodge's sorry arse for weeks and when he finally starts scoring Clarko drags him. **** Melbourne are shit! What was looking like a comfortable REBCats win has now become a toss of the coin job.

REBCats Nicknat + Sinclair (McAffer 100 for the E)
Squeaky 2pts + Martin and LeCras

Go Nick Nat!

Got up and got 2281 which was the best score of the round in premier league. Martin, Kennedy, Maric and Cox all played poorly though so could've been even better.

Got over the line in the end but not scoring well again. Upgrade of LeCras to Nick Nat proved decisive. Stevie Johnson breaking my balls....averages 120 plus and doesn't crack the ton when I bring him in GRRRR.

Round eight had some absolute nailbiters with the match of the round being decided by the barest of margins in Lions' favour as the Captain copped a bit of a heartbreaker. The Underdogs were another side to have a very narrow victory as they trumped Cork in the Ocean who fell out of the top eight with the three point loss.

Some of the other games were more conclusive with comfortable victories to Poon Army, MILLER MOSQUITOES, Q Before You and the inform Buddyroughhawks who are looking more like a genuine contender every week. Bottom half teams Richo Richo Man and REBCats managed to secure important victories that keep their finals hopes alive but the bottom three sides are now on life support as they only have three wins between them after eight matches.

Dutchy has a history of storming back late so perhaps not all is lost for the Dodos but this is the year that the chardy socialists' luck might finally run out at this level and The Ginger Ninjas haven't got going at all this season.

I am a shattered man after Hondo's Eleventh Hour trade in of Dane Swan proved to be a decisive masterstroke as the Texans racked up a 2181 to win our clash by 70 points. That's both of the top teams that have loopholed me now and it's fair to say I'm not a fan. Most of the top sides had good wins but I can't believe Woggy can score **** all and be 6-3! Not happy.

Besides me, the other big losers this week were Q Man who slipped out of the top eight to be replaced by the victorious Spuds and Underdogs who copped the Ginger Ninjas on a good day to wear an upset loss that puts the heat on Dutchys Dodos who disapointed again. Richo Richo made it back to back with an important win over Longwood Lions as us envious teams in the bottom half look hopefully at who might be vulnerable up top.

All in a all a pretty good performance in a bye week with the exceptions of the chardies, Dutchy and that arsey Hawkeye combination. Bet he scores more than 1598 against me. I reckon they should play SuperCoach under a roof and that my team has no mental issues at all.

regards,

Brad Scott
