Another work arguement of mine has spilled into the SAFooty website.
Which band has had the better career?

U2 for longevity...
Although Bono tends get a bit self righteous & preachy at times!

Abba. Complex songs of great variety that have a lot going on in them without you realising. U2 are one trick ponies.

A lot of people forget Abba, like all recording artists in the 60s and 70s, recorded all their material in analogue.
The variety of instruments in their compositions the harmonies (no mixing and matching of takes to make it sound right), and the counter melodies of the instruments. Anderson Ulvaeus and Andersson will go down as one of the great musical influences of the 20th century like Lennon and McCartney, Harrison (Here comes the Sun is one of the great popular music compositions of the 20th century simple in parts but so incredible complex through the bridge), Springsteen, Bono, the Edge, Mullins & Clayton, Orbison, Berry, King, and Armstrong...
it may not be "music" to JJJ, DDD or RRR listeners and their psuedo-intellectual bias against popular music culture but some of the names mentioned above have produce music of the highest order despite the fact it fits perfectly in the 3 min pop song genre that is favoured by commercial radio and the vast majority of people listening to music on this planet

Yeah. One band is fronted by a sexy brunette and a blonde with a killer arse. The other band is fronted by a poonce with a social conscience who fancies himself as the fifth Beatle. No question at all!

U2 one trick ponies? Hmmm, there's a fair bit of variety in that catologue boys. I'd say by U2 by a long way. The only Abba song I like is Knowing me knowing you and maybe SOS but the rest pffffftttt. Entirely forgettable and the very definition of overrated.
U2>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Abba.

Jeez a wide range of opinions here -nothing brings the harshness out is some people like music...
Anyway, if we can be objective for a minute!
In terms of style, Abba were pure pop, while U2 have spanned the pop/rock/alt rock spectrum.
Both groups possess large amounts of genuine talent.
The blokes in Abba were top musicians who could really compose some quality tunes (compared with the vast majority of pop that has appeared over the last 40 odd years).
The girls were superb singers.
Not cool to like Abba, but realistically they were very good for their genre.
U2 are a true rock group, who have stood the test of time and established their own recognisable sound.
Haven't been afraid to experiment and have delivered consistency over their careers.
Having two of rock's finest (guitarist & singer) hasn't hurt.
Overall though, U2 are far more interesting, stimulating and enduring to listen to than Abba.
