in a survey a few years ago called LOVE IS ALL AROUND.
About 1962 or thereabouts a band called THE TROGGS [in my top 25] sang
the original version.
I actually saw the TROGGS in the late 70s or early 80s live in Adelaide in a nightclub.

When I was a younger lad I had a mate who was a simliar vintage to you (and funnily enough the same taste in footy teams) and he managed to find a copy of their LP from overseas (it was still being pressed in europe in the late 70's) and it was pretty good. I remember "Just One Girl" wasn't too bad also he had an original copy of their follow up to "Lies" "One Track Mind" which was a good track also.
For younger folk that have no idea what we are talking about.....

Do you have the "This is Where I Belong" tribute album by various artists (complete with Ray Davies/Damon Albarn live duet of Waterloo Sunset - Cockney accents at 10 paces)? It demonstrates how good the songs are and their timeless nature. The version of "Picture Book" on this album wound up on a Hewlett Packard ad.

LL's additional trivia....

The Troggs toured Australia in 86 or 87 (can't remember which) and when I say Troggs it was Reg Presley and whoever he could scrap together for a tour at the time. Ronnie Bond had recently left the band (after twenty or so years) and Chris Britton didn't come out here on that tour for some reason. Anyway my cousin looked after Reg on the Adelaide leg of the tour and I got to meet him. A very nice guy. I found it a little bit sad that the man was eeking out a living touring the world playing various gigs and the one song that his band was best known for at that time (Wild Thing) didn't even get him royalities as it was written by Chip Taylor (the same guy who wrote Angel of the Morning). Well that certainly changed in 1994 with the release of the film Four Weddings and a Funeral. Wet Wet Wet (as Mal mentions) had a huge worldwide hit with it and Presley became a millionaire overnight due to the royalities (as he was the only songwriter of the track) from the film and the sales of the soundtrack and single. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy and it only took 30 years after The Troggs started.

There was a jeans commercial on TV about 10 years ago
featuring a TROGGS classic called WITH A GIRL LIKE YOU

LL when i saw the TROGGS they played in a nightclub in town
might have been on the western side of Light Square just behind
Hindley Street

MCA have not seen that Davies/Albarn duet[who is Albarn?]

I grew up in the 70s/80s as a nightclubber but the 60s music
I would have to say was the best Ive heard.

First live band I ever saw was SKYHOOKS 1975 at out school Woodville High School

Not the stand outs (which are of course St Nick Cave and New Order for mine) but the stuff I loved is St Etienne, Ride, The Chills, The Hummingbirds and The Underground Lovers, as it's rare I see them on a list like this!

Of those I particularly love The Chills and Ride.

I saw The Troggs in a venue called Joe's Bierhaus (basically a big pub) in Berlin in 81 or 82, the same venue had bands like Gerry and the Pacemakers (without Gerry), The Tremaloes . A lot of English bands that were well known in the early sixties that had sort of faded away played there.
