Two important women in the world of rock passed away recently...

Sandy West (July 10, 1959–October 21, 2006) was an American musician, singer, songwriter, and drummer. She was hailed by fans and critics alike to be one of the most groundbreaking drummers in rock and roll history. She passed away last October due to cancer at the age of 47.

Mariska Veres (1 October 1947 - 2 December 2006) was a Dutch singer who was best known as the lead singer of the first pop group from that country to go number one in America. She passed away last December due to cancer aged 59.

Two buns to whovever came name the two bands that these women shot to fame with.

Mariska Veres was the singer of the band who originally sang "Venus", I think. Pretty sure I remember reading that one back in December when she left this mortal coil. The name of the band escapes me... Do I get any baked goods for knowing that much?

Ahh that 'd be Shocking Blue then!

They also recorded the original version of Love Buzz - which Nirvana later covered.

Sandy West was the Runaways drummer... 'Rock in Peace' :supz:
All Chick 70's Hard Rock/Heavy Metal with a little bit of Punk thrown in (Not the Rooster! )
Launched the successful solo careers of Joan Jett & Lita Ford...
"I love playing with Fire!"
Classic! 8)

SHOCKING BLUE was a Dutch band in the late 60s early seventies.
The lead singer mentioned had jet black hair very long and quite nice looking.
VENUS was thier apparent one hit wonder and a favourite of mine
I reckon BANANRAMA did a cover on VENUS as well.

My fav SHOCKING BLUE song after VENUS
was NEVER MARRY A RAILROAD MAN a brilliant song.
as most songs were back then.
I bought both records[vinyls  ]as a school kid.

AHHHH those lyrics
" Im your venus, Im your fire, at your desire..."

I know that Shocking Blue are looked upon as a one hit wonder due to Venus, but I reckon Mighty Joe and Never marry a railroad man were sizeable hits as well.

He's VERY crook. He was diagonised with cancer in 2005. Haven't heard that he's died but without being callous it wouldn't be long now.
I heard him interviewed by Grant Cameron on 891 when I was in Adelaide in December. Still great value but obviously suffering and in a lot of pain.

You're kidding me ain'tcha?
"That'll be the day, hey, hey... when I Die!"
Does the name 'Buddy Holly' ring a bell?
The interesting story about that incident was that country singer & the
'Dukes of Hazzard' balladeer Waylon Jennings who passed away a year or two ago
declined to take that same fateful flight!
The lucky sod eh!
