Here in Melbourne it was announced recently that after much lobbying a laneway would be getting named after the late, great guitarist Rowland S Howard. Rowland played in many bands over the years but most famously in The Boys Next Door and Birthday Party with Nick Cave and Mick Harvey. Rowland's playing was unique and he influenced many bands over the world most famously Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, and Sonic Youth to name three. Johnny Marr, Jello Biafra and Henry Rollins also count themselves as massive fans,
Rowland,a St Kilda resident, died tragically young at 50 of liver disease in 2009.
It's a great idea for Government and Council to acknowledge local musical legends and hope it's the start of many more.
(Pity the guy who organised it is such an ugly bastard ;) )
