The cover version is better...

Was watching the Rage retro special last night and they played Shocking Blue's "Venus". Always thought - and NEVER thought I'd consider saying this about ANY of their songs - that Bananarama's version of the song was better than Shocking Blue's.

What other notable examples are there of the cover version being better than the original?

I'll probably get howled down for this but this headbanger always rated Van Halen's You Really Got Me over the more sedate Kinks original.

I think Pseudo Echo improved "Funky Town".

There's some more but I will have to return to the thread when I remember them.

Completely forgot that one, top pick. A beautiful and haunting version.

FC - I'm guessing you know "The Loved One" was a cover itself? ;)

I reckon The Screaming Jets version of Eve of Destruction runs rings around Barry McGuire's original, as too their version of Shivers, as opposed to the Nick Cave's Boys Next Door version.

A few more come to mind, which some folks might consider blasphemous, but no worse than preferring Madonna's version of American Pie to Don McLean's... :P

G'NR's 'Sympathy For The Devil' vs The 'Stones (possibly blasphemous??).
G'NR's 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' vs Bob Dylan (possibly again?? :P)
Pearl Jam 'Last Kiss' vs J Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers.
Green Day 'I Fought The Law' vs Bobby Fuller 5 (& The Clash & The Dukes from the Reckless Kelly movie).
Jimi Hendrix 'All Along The Watchtower' vs Bob Dylan.
Jeff Healey Band 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' vs The Beatles.
Metallica 'Whiskey In The Jar' vs The Dubliners (& Thin Lizzy & no end of Irish folk singers.. )
Metallica 'Turn The Page' vs Bob Seger.

Plenty more I can't think of right now......

Great taste. Awesome song. Spewing im not old enough to have seen JC play this live(if he did), but i did have the pleasure of seeing NIN close Soundwave the other year with it. Was a highlight of my 25 years.
