Laneway 2011

Did anyone else here go?

For me it was mostly spent being irritated with bland haircut bands and the inane i-Youth of today (sorry but I must have missed the bit when rolled up denim shorts and slip-ons became de rigeur fashion for the Australian male) but one band, Les Savy Fav, were pretty bloody gobsmacking and blew everything else away. If you’ve never heard of them, the singer is a bald, bearded, fat ape who regurgitated fruit and spat on the audience, stripped down to his underpants and fondled his ample girth, jumped into the mosh with men rushing to kiss him on the mouth or exchange bodily fluids in the form of wine, smashed a clock with his mic with glass going everywhere, went out onto Morphett St to serenade bewildered pedestrians and traffic still wearing said underpants, ate a filthy sock and drank liquid from cans thrown from the audience, nearly set his beard alight when lighting some sparklers...umm...my brain is too fried to remember more. All the while the band rocks out like nothing weird is happening. Ugly, dirty, funny and absolutely fantastic. I don’t remember such energy in a room before and I don’t think it’s something I’ll forget in a hurry.

Here’s a little taste of their performance in Brissy

I went. I only saw a bit of Les Savy Fav, but they were pretty awesome.

It certainly is a festival that attracts a younger demographic. I felt old at 34. The most irritating part was having to line up for over 15 minutes to go to the toilet. The fun part of being a girl.

I thought Cut Copy put on a good show.

Unlike last year, when having only one set of toilets meant blokes were urinating in the sink and overflowing hand-towel bin liners (mmm, lucky cleaners) this year they installed a bank of impressive looking portaloos. On trying to sample said 'loos it turned out they were out of order and thus it was back to the sink / bin-liner / dry reaching action.

The missus went for the second time and said it was way more packed than last year. Was really tough to get around apparently, and one venue was nearly impossible to get in/out of.

She didn't enjoy it as much as last year.
