Putting "best of" or "greatest hits" albums in the list is instant fail.
Should be regular album releases only.

I was looking through this book at Greville Records the other day with the owner and we were pissing ourselves laughing. ;)
Seriously these three guys need to listen to more alternative music and not put token alternative acts in there as if it's expected.

This was a list of the top 50 albums that appeared in The Age a couple of years back and they asked a panel of a dozen or so people involved in the music industry. Which IMO is a better thought out list.

1 10-1 Midnight Oil (1981)

3 Living in the 70s Skyhooks (1974)
4 Hi Fi Way You Am I (1995)
5 Stoneage Romeos Hoodoo Gurus (1984)
6 Gossip Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls (1986)
7 (I'm) Stranded the Saints (1977)

8 Kick INXS (1987)
9 Diesel and Dust Midnight Oil (1987)

14 Crowded House Crowded House (1986)
15 Human Frailty Hunters and Collectors (1986)
16 High Voltage AC/DC (1976)
17 Sunnyboys Sunnyboys (1981)

Of the first list - and yes, Greatest Hits listings make me skim over it only - Living In The 70's is too low for an album that has had such massive impact on Australian music. It was one of the first albums that made writing from an Australian perspective acceptable, rather than singing about Memphis or Noo Yawk.

Tend to think Business As Usual (Men At Work) is also way too low, for both longevity and the feats it achieved in the US, in particular.

I know at least a few people will howl at this one, but seriously - no Little River Band?? Diamantina Cocktail was a pivotal album for breaking Australian music, consistently, in the United States, followed by Sleeper Catcher and First Under The Wire. "Reminiscing" remains one of the highest played overseas songs ever on US radio.

When did Split Enz become Australian? :?

Bernard Fanning?? Good heavens....that doesn't even bear any further comment.

Otherwise, not too bad, but agree with LL, his second list has a bit more credibility, IMHO.

Running order aside, there are quite a few similarities though, with a couple of obvious exceptions.

That's just it. They called it the Go Between bridge because they knew that naming it after those nuffys was an embarrassment to the city. Maybe people would start thinking of that dire 'Your town' song and start jumping off the bridge!

The most overrated band in that list by far is AC/DC. They are very basic rock and roll band recycling Chuck Berry riffs with r&r cliche lyrics. And that's fine. That's what they do....but to rate Back in Black as the 2nd best Australian album ever is laughable (or embarassing). Forgetting the fact it was sung by a Geordie, Produced by a pom and written by a couple of Scottish brothers ;)

Well if Ben Lee, Baby Animals, Bernard Fanning, Missy Higgins, Aussie Crawl, Augie March and I'm Talking can make it no reason these guys shouldn't have. ;)
