Like most of us, I go through phases in music listening, dragging out as much material on a band as I can find, and on another one of my regular Skyhooks rediscoveries at the moment. I thought Leaping Lindner summed it up beautifully in another thread once, when he said about how they were one of the first bands to sing about Australia, rather than the US and UK. While "Living In The 70's" remains their seminal work for mine, really like a lot of their later stuff, like "Women In Uniform". Having said that, the Tony Williams era leaves me cold and was certainly one album too many.
Greg Macainish, IMHO, remains one of the most perceptive songwriters this country has produced (with a big nod to Paul Kelly, who would be a good subject of another thread) and it's a huge shame the band can never play with the most recognised lineup again. At the time that Shirley Strachan left, apparently a couple of band members suggested getting a female lead singer, and wonder aloud how it would go if someone like Suze DeMarchi (Baby Animals) was put out the front for a benefit concert or the like?
How many here were lucky enough to see the band play live? One of my everlasting regrets that I never did. Also, does anyone have a copy of what's become known as "The Lost Album" - a collection of 11 songs released as part of a double CD in 1999, which was essentially "The Latest and Greatest" on one disc, and 8 unreleased tracks, along with "Jukebox In Siberia", "Tall Timber" and "Happy Hippy Hut" on the other.
