Anyone go last night. Great night if you're a fan, but perhaps I'm showing my age

Would have loved to have gone, but it's the money. More of a Crowed House fan myself.

Didn't go but I saw the song list in the paper. Not a bad mix of old and new - particulary impressed they dug out "Bold as Brass".
I saw them in 1982 at Thebby as part of the Time and Tide tour and they were musically faultless.
i couln't go....

Yep I went - it was awesome! I've never fully embraced the Enz basically because I never much liked Tim Finn. Well, he won me over completely - I heard him on TV a few years back and his voice was shot but last night it was spot on in 'I hope I Never' & 'Poor Boy' etc. I had a few yawns when they disappeared up their clackers for a few songs (eg Jamboree) but when they were good they were sublime! 'Message to My Girl' gave me goosebumps. I think they were genuinely affected by the crowd's reaction too - good to see Adelaide rocking.
Evermore however were crud of the highest order. Cliched, pompous, predictable U2 wannabes. One good song and 10 others that were a poor facsimilie of it. The bass/keyboard player should have been in Wa Wa Nee he was that much of an 80s toolbag. There was a nun a few seats down from me who loved it though.

That's almost as cringeworthy as the 'Tiser review which tried to cram in as many song-titles-as-bad-puns as they could. I have doubts the reviewer was even there!

For all of you Split Enz fans out there, I can highly recommend their first album 'Mental Notes'. This album, released in 1976 is a semi autobiographical set that sums up their pre-'True Colours' era lack of restraint in all it's glory.
The opening track 'Walking down a road' rolls and halts and jangles all over the place but still works. 'Under the wheel' is a masterpiece of misery unequalled until the release of 'The Wall' by Floyd 3 years later. Seemingly out of place is the pop gem 'Amy'. 'Stranger than fiction' tells the tale of (Tim's?) troubled childhood with some wailing singing from Tim Finn at his absoute raw best. If you are into albums such as 'Frenzy', then you should check out this album.
Not a record for those who are more Crowded House or 'True Colours' era Enz fans.
regards,
REB
