Australian guitarist Rowland S Howard lost his battle with liver cancer this morning. Rowland started out as teenager with The Young Charlatans then joined Boys Next Door who moved to the UK and changed their name to The Birthday Party. When The Birthday Party imploded he went onto to play with Crime and City Solution, before forming These Immortal Souls. In the last decade he released two solo (critically acclaimed) albums Teenage Snuff Film (1999) and Pop Crimes (2009).
I first was introduced to Rowland the musician through the album Door Door by Boys Next Door in 1979 and I was introduced to Rowland the person through mutual friends back in the late 1990s.
I found him to be a wonderful man full of funny stories and gentle humour and a great friend.
I'll miss you mate. RIP you deserve it.

I was shocked to see photos of him recently when he did some solo shows and this sadly doesn't come as a surprise. :(
You know there isn't a God when people like this go before their time while these 'Idol' cretins pollute our media.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Wow that is really sad and it is a surprise to me as I didn't know he was ill. Sorry for you too LL but lucky you got to meet the man and form a friendship - that's very cool indeed.

sad to hear LL- I believe he was at that breakfast I attended (albeit with pneumonia) at St Kilda?

There will be a mini Rowland S Howard tribute at the start of Rage on Saturday night.

I'm sad to hear this. One of the unheralded greats of Australian music.
