Rage Against The Machine for Christmas Number One?

A FaceBook group has been set up by a pair of enterprising Rage Against The Machine fans to try and prevent the winner of this year’s X Factor from going to Number One at Christmas.

“Fed up of Simon Cowell's latest karaoke act being Christmas Number One? Me too! So who's up for a mass-purchase of the track Killing In The Name from December 13 as a protest to the X-Factor monotony?,” reads a post by the group’s admins Tracy and Jon on the Rage Against The Machine For Christmas No.1 group’s homepage.

“Even if you have the track already - let's face it most of us do - just buy it again before Christmas,” the post continues.

This year’s Christmas Number One will be revealed on Sunday December 20, so the group are urging people to purchase Killing In The Name – made famous by it’s **** you I won’t do what you tell me refrain – digitally through iTunes or We7 between 00:01AM on Sunday, December 13 and 11:59PM on Saturday December 19. And with close to 60,000 members of the group already, they might just have a shot!

Cowell has called the effort to have RATM No 1 @ Christmas, 'contrived'.
Then again.. he's the expert in that area.

I hope he said that ironically and winked at the same time.

The campaign has worked. Good thing that Top Of The Pops is finished, they would have had no hope of playing this one, or having the band on to play it :)

A lot better than the X-Factor effort!

But surely if you are a record compnay and want a single to go number 1 all you do is pack the stores with stock of said song and then falsify the returns numbers when it doesn't sell the quantity expected, and also pay off commercial record stations to put the song on high rotation........ah shirt did I say that out loud???? ;)

Good ol' Hyping. Companies used to completely deny the practice occurred until a few started getting fined for it.

An aside: The brits seem to make a big deal about whatever song happens to be #1 at Xmas time. What's up with that? No other nation gives a stuff.
