Anyone going Friday night at the Gov? Southee?

Really disappointed I can't go to this, would love a review from anyone who does.

Was awesome, despite the smallish crowd. Didn't know quite what to expect with their newer material being quite mellow. But thankfully they rocked out very favourably, a majorly buff Steve Kilbey almost in a trance like state at times, it's hard to believe Marty Wilson-Piper was once pinup material - looks like he's been spending time with Grizzly Adams. The chiming Rickenbackers sounded sublime. Started with an awesome Tantalized, played Myrrh, Milky Way, Reptile, NESW and plenty off the new album. They surprised with a stunning version of the Smashing Pumpkins' Disarm which was even better than the real thing.

Support band Astreetlightsong were great too, the lead singer playing keys later with the Church. Talking to them made me feel very old but they have a great 80s sound, via bands like the Killers, White Lies etc. I doubt they were even around in the 80s the young whippersnappers

Love The Gov - off to see Jarvis Cocker there next week

Had a ticket but unfortunately did not go due to being sick....

Was going by myself too and it would have been great to catch up ZZ.

That's a bummer Southee, would've been good to catch up. I've never seen the Church before, only Steve Kilbey and MWP playing together and I remember nearly falling asleep. I was expecting lots of slow, meandering numbers and was surprised by how much they rocked out.

The guitarist out of Astreetlightsong turns out to be the son of Tim Powels, the Church's drummer which I think they keep pretty quiet (he certainly gave no indication of it while we were chatting about them, LOL). I really liked their set though and bought their EPs on iTunes. Tim Powels used to be in the Venetians BTW which is something I'm sure he'd like to keep pretty quiet as well!

BTW....I have both those Venetian albums and like them very much for a dose of good aussie 80's rock...but dont tell anyone though. They are not bad albums actually.

Nothing wrong with "Bitter Tears". One of the better songs from 1988
