Embarrassing artists/bands you like

Postby CK » Thu Mar 12, 2009 10:24 pm

Title is self explanatory - which artists or bands are considered really daggy, old fashioned, out of touch, etc etc...but you just can't help still listening to them frequently, despite all the derision of your mates or family.

May as well put the hand up and I know plenty on here will be sniggering knowingly at what is coming...

Little River Band. Love the harmonies, love the songwriting (When Frank Sinatra declared that "Reminiscing" was one of the only songs he wished he'd written, it said something!), and still keep them on frequent rotation.   ...especially some of the stuff when the tensions within the band were at their highest (notably "Man On Your Mind", "Take It Easy On Me" - George Martin, legendary Beatles producer, produced the album "Time Exposure" and said at the time that the politics within the Beatles were an absolute picnic compared to those of Graham Goble, Glenn Shorrock, Beeb Birtles and the other members)

I'll stand in the corner now ;) ...and see who's next!
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

LOL CK- I like this thread!

Having a squizz at my CD collection, I have some stuff which definitely dont fit with the rest. Top 3 would be:

The Best of Fine Young Cannibals
Best of Simply Red
Best of Billy Joel

The wife and family dont think they sit real well next to I Killed the Prom Queen, Killswitch Engage or Carcass :D 8)

Not so much all the artists work, but when my wife and I first watched "The Big Lebowski" we were really digging the song "What condition my condition was in". Turns out it's Kenny Rogers  in his original band The First Edition. It's also on the album Original Seeds "Songs that inspired Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds" Volume 2 and often gets a run on the Lindner CD player.

I'm a big Tom Jones fan.

I guess that is unusual.

I quite like a bit of Paramore, Anastacia and (gulp) the odd Cranberries song.

Ok....I will take a deep breath!!!

HALL AND OATES - Brillant songwritting, vocal harmonies, catchy tunes with killer hooks!!!

Well produced, slick music.

If you dont tap your feet to the likes of Private Eyes, You make my dreams come true or I can't go for that.....well, feel your pulse, you might be dead!!! ;)

No, not alone there...another I would listen to happily enough...along with (another deep breath and closes eyes) Air Supply. "Lost In Love" is still a really nice example of harmonies building to a crescendo.

Some might say I also have a disturbing number of Eagles songs on my MP3, although there are too many to narrow down. "Lyin' Eyes", "Hotel California", "Take It Easy", "Tequila Sunrise"...still get the hairs on the back of the neck rising. Actually, Don Henley's "The End Of The Innocence" is one of the best songs the Eagles didn't record as a group that they should have.

I DO NOT RATE Achey Breaky Heart.

Also dont mind: B*Witched - Cest La Vie, Status Quo, Thomas Dolby - She blinded me science and a few Aqua songs
