Wondering which artists people consider to be the ones that most represent Australian-ism? By that, I mean which evoke the strongest feelings of patriotism, understanding the Australian way, evoking memories etc?
For mine, Paul Kelly captures some of the best of Australia, whether it be through "Leaps And Bounds", "Before Too Long" or "To Her Door", which all capture the essence of our life. Love Weddings Parties Anything for the same thing ("Under The Clocks" is a classic anthem about spending a day at the footy) and to a degree, Cold Chisel brings back the memories of the late 70's - early 80's pub culture (similar to Radio Birdman, The Radiators etc).
Thoughts?

I would agree with Paul Kelly, Who's Going to Make the Gravy a very poignant song
and The Angels and Chisel do it for me for Australianism
also Dave Warner from the late 70's and early 80's

Greg Mc Ainish of Skyhooks is right up there. Probably the first rock songwriter in this country to write songs about Australian places. Up 'til then everyone had written about the UK or US
Some Skyhooks classics "Toorak Cowboy" "Balwyn Calling" "Lygon Street Limbo" etc....

GANGgajang. Hey, "this is Australia"
and Hunters & Collectors, and perhaps the Go Betweens.
One might also add Kevin Bloody Wilson, from a slightly different perspective

Cold Chisel,The Angels for our pub rock beer and bourbon culture.
Midnight Oil,Silverchair for political and social topic statements.
Paul Kelley for song writing ability.
AC/DC for putting Aussie rock on the world stage ( how did no one else mention them

)
So for mine,AC/DC are the ones.

If AC/DC are Australia's greatest musical export does that make Mel Gibson our greatest actor?

Possibly THE most Australian band ever! They can't play overseas as other folk simply don't understand it.

Love the Skyhooks. Don Walker & Chisel have written some great songs with reference to Australian culture/life.
Khe Sahn, Breakfast at Sweethearts, Star Hotel, Bow River, Saturday Night etc...

Very, very remiss of me not to mention Skyhooks. They were huge as I was just discovering music and remember hearing most of the "Living In The 70's" album throughout childhood. Agree on "Balwyn Calling", "You Just Like Me Cos I'm Good In Bed" (2 DoubleJ, later JJJ's first song played), "Women In Uniform"...loved them, still do enormously. Very influential to my musical spectrum.

LOL...When I was a young dude, I worked at Big W, Cumberland Park. One Saturday my comrade on broom and I decided to change the instore CD.
We popped on the Skyhooks ! The manager on duty was OK about it until SMUT !! A couple of customers complained about playing a song about wanking in the theatre

In direct answer to the question, Crowded House gets my vote, successfull here and overseas and yet kept an element of australianism in their music right till the end..
