BB was a DJ and was famous for a hit single CHANTILLY LACE in the late 50s
BB Richie Valens and a few others were heading to a concert by bus, BB was feeling sick on the bus
A guy called Jennings gave up his Plane seat to BB [some went by bus others by plane]
There was a seat left and another guy and Richie Valens tossed a coin to get that seat
Valens won the toss
How unlucky for Valens the plane crashed and all onboard were killed
It gets worse
Also on that plane was the 50s rock superstar Buddy Holly
Holly/BB/Valens all died in the plane crash in 1959

that Jennings fella was Waylon Jennings, famous country musician in his own right
at the time he was playing bass in Buddy Hollys band

Legend has it that Holly jokingly said to Jennings "I hope your bus breaks down" and Jennings replied (tongue in cheek) "I hope your plane crashes".

and apparently Jennings was had the guilts for years and felt responsible for the crash after his comments

Off topis I know, but following on from that tragic story, an old lass that used to clean the offices where I worked suffered from the guilt she felt. Heer old man was a bus driver and one Sunday morning he told her he was working overtime that day. vShe was p1ssed with him as they had planned a day out, and they had a row. The last thing she said to him was, "well go and throw yourself under the bloody bus". He walked down to the depot and was accidently runover by a bus, and killed. She was left to bring up 4 kids and was still living with that guilt after more then 40 years, when she told me the story.

Always think what your parting words are as they may be your last.
Never go to work on a row with your partner. (My parents always taught me, never go to bed on a row.) They told my 5 brothers the same thing

So much speculation to that song. What were all the lyrics about? "The father, son and the holy ghost"? Bopper, Valens, Holly?? McLean was a newspaper delivery boy in 1959: "February made me shiver, with every paper i delivered" (the crash was February 3, 1959). "Bad news on the doorstep, i couldn't take one more step".

"I can't remember if i cried when i read about his widowed bride". Holly's wife was pregnant at the time of the crash and miscarried shortly afterwards.

"I met a girl who sang the blues, i asked her for some happy news but she just smiled and turned away" Janis Joplin?????

"And the jester sand for the king and queen, in a coat he borrowed from James Dean and a voice that came from you and me"

The jester Bob Dylan? The King and Queen? Was it Elvis and Connie Francis?? Maybe the Kennedy's??

In the movie "Rebel Without a Cause" James Dean has a red windbreaker that holds symbolic meaning throughout the film. In one particularly intense scene, Dean lends his coat to a guy who is shot and killed; Dean's father arrives, sees the coat on the dead man, thinks it's Dean, and loses it. On the cover of "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan," Dylan is wearing just such a red windbreaker, posed in a street scene similar to movie starring James Dean.

Could go on forever. What an intriguing song.

When Don McLean was once asked what the song meant he said
"It means I never have to work again."

Without doubt one of the greatest bands to grace this planet
The band was formed in 1965 and split 1968 or 1969 ????????
A couple of other great hits were Lazy Sunday, Tin Soldier
Thier first gig was as they were kicked out of a concert after 3 songs !
The last gig lead singer Steve Marriott walked off the during a NYE gig 1968-69 and the band split
Marriott joined Humble Pie [Im with you ....joined up with Peter Frampton ]
The others [all or some] joined a raspy barrell voiced young man called Rod Stewart
They eventually became THE FACES

Like many musos back then Marriott died too early
He died in a house fire when asleep, the cause believed to be from a cigarette
Days b4 that he was working on a new album with Peter Frampton

In an interview with Jennings at a later date.
He said to this day he still thinks about what he said.
