Definitely Abba.

Every deployment I did it was ALWAYS the most popular and asked for music at the various Base disco nights...you should see the way Para's will elbow girlies off the dance floor when Abba comes on

For me The Eagles would be a close 2nd.

can the musical experts on here help me with a definition of "pop" music ... I think the label has some stigma to it so fans try to keep their fav bands out of the definition

If pop music = 3 minute mainstream radio songs then do the Beatles, Queen, INX, Rolling Stones qualify??

It would be hard to go past the Beatles if they qualify -otherwise ABBA

sounds familiar but when I was a young digger back in the early to mid 80's it was Chisel or the Angels

as far as pop goes, early Beatles or ABBA

Haha...had a feeling it might be a universal phenomenon. Another guaranteed to get them going was Madness...although not my kinda thing...but still popular.

You mean, you want us to make your mind up?

Then the answer is BUCKS FIZZ!

You gotta speed it up, and then you gotta slow it down
Coz if you believe that our love can hit the top
You gotta play around
But soon you will find that there comes a time
For making your mind up

Just a pity that Limahl was a one-man band and we can't sneak him in

Abba has to be the definition of pop and all credit to them, but always great still when the clip for 'I Ran' from Flock of Seagulls pops up on Music Max

Rog - Limahl could also get a gig via his band Kajagoogoo .... "I'm too shy- shy, hush-hush ..." :D

Anyway, the biggest selling "pop" artists (reputedly) according to Wikipedia:
(edited out what I think are not pop)

> 500m records sold
1 The Beatles
2 Michael Jackson
200m - 499m records sold
3 ABBA
4 Celine Dion
5 Cher
6 Cliff Richard
7 Elton John
8 Madonna
9 Rod Stewart
10 The Rolling Stones

In the 100m-199m sold list we get the likes of Backstreet Boys, Bee-Gees, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, The Carpenters, Chicago, Dire Straits, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, George Michael, Prince, Queen, U2, Village People

If Michael Jackson is number two then there are a helluva lot of people with absolutely no taste.

The Bealtes without question, absolutely huge in the 1960s (sustained popularity from 1964-1970 and beyond) nothing else has come close after, although ABBA were pretty big in the 70s.The difference is The Beatles changed music. In contrast ABBA performed and wrote beautifully crafted pop music, not to my taste but were obviously very talented.
