You can sing a song. Who cares. Can you write one?

Postby RustyCage » Thu May 01, 2008 1:13 am

I'm probably in the minority here, but I always find it interesting when I read about song writers, and look what songs they have written, and finding that some of the most popular or well known songs in musical history were written by that person. On the same note, its interesting looking at popular songs and seeing who actually wrote them.

As TISM sang on BFW -
"Who writes the songs, that's the thing, any clotheshorse can learn to sing
Kylie's albums are eponymous but the songwriters stay anonymous"

So who are these anonymous song writers, the people with the real talent? Some I've read about are...

CATHY DENNIS
6 UK #1s:
Toxic - Britney Spears
Can't Get You out of My Head - Kyle Minogue
Never Had a Dream Come True - S Club 7
Have You Ever - S Club 7
Anything Is Possible - Will Young
About You Now - The Sugababes

LINDA PERRY
Get the Party Started - Pink
Lonely Girl - Pink
Beautiful - Christina Aguilera
If You're Gonna Fly Away - Faith Hill
What You Waiting For? - Gwen Steffani
Right In The Middle - Joan Jett
Save Me - Unwritten Law (co-writer)
Candyman - Christina Aguilera
Hurt - Christina Aguilera
Wonderful Life - Gwen Steffani
My Love - Celine Dion
New Dawn - Celine Dion

I'll add some more when I can remember them. I know theres the Stock, Aitken & Waterman machine....

To be continued.....
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

I reckon anyone can write lyrics, it is composing the music that is the tough part. I've written a zillion songs but I am supremely untalented. The people with the real talent are the performers..imagine trying to sell 'Can't get you out of my head' if it was sung by Kevin Bloody Wilson??

Bacharrach and David are probably among the greatest exponents of song writing with others making hits - sooooo many of them.

Then there was the Brill Building writers in the US - the leading stars in that were Neil Diamond and Carol King.

In Australia there's Mark (blurrghhh) Holden.

Hard to believe that Linda Perry was in 4 Non Blondes when you look at the 'hits' she's had since....

That's very funny REB

Back on topic - songwriters are not given their dues most of us assume the performing artist wrote it

There was a documentary on TV about a songwriting team who, among many hits, wrote "Like A Virgin" and showed on the piano how they came up with it .... it was very interesting.
In between signatures .....

Vanda & Young?

Guy Chambers is another behind the scenes of people such as Kylie, Robbie and even INXS! Although he co-wrote most of Robbie Williams' hits, after he was sacked Robbie's career pretty much went down the crapper.

Wrote for the likes of Kiss, Aerosmith, BonJovi, Motley Crue, Loveboy...the list goes on but thats all I can think off the top of my head. He was a massive songwriter of the 80's. :)

Always amazes me when you see the suddenely rich and famous young artist spruiking their next album with the line "I wrote all the songs myself" and find the album absolute shite compared to their previous effort which was handed to them on a plate.

Other big artists in their own right have also had big success as songwriters for others such as the little purple wierdo Prince who has been a proliffic writer and producer for other acts.
