I received this tome as a leaving present from my work.
Fantastic volume of work.
Thought I'd share some of the albums in it with you guys, any reflections I might have and then let you guys tell some stories of your love or whatever of the album.

Here goes:

Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley.

The iconic cover shows who Elvis was when he started, and what he was going to achieve. It's a passionate performance photo. Some (LL in particular) will recognise the cover work as some which was replicated at a much later stage.

Recorded on Sun Records label the collection was pieced together from several piecey sessions.

Leading off is Carl Perkins' Blue Suede Shoes (the writing of which also incidentally and indirectly involved Johnny Cash).

And then follows with more covers, including Ray Charles jitterbug treat I Got A Woman and Little Richard's Tutti Frutti.

Of course the old standard Blue Moon gets a run.

It's also worth noting that the album's best known track is Heartbreak Hotel, but was only ever released on reissues, and doesn't actually feature on the original.

Anyone who owns the Clash's 'London Calling' album will notice the similarities between the album covers.

Apparently the Clash were big Elvis fans.

Tangentially, I was given "1001 books you must read before you die" as a birthday present this year. Eaxctly three days prior to my birthday I saw this book in Borders, and thought to myself "I would never ever spend even a dollar to buy that book". Well, I guess I didn't spend a dollar... One of my least favourite things to do is pretending to like gifts which I thoroughly detest.

Into the 60s now:

Ray Charles Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music.

An album I'd love to have. Ray Charles, a rootin' tootin' mainlinin' Afro American took on a musical genre reserved for Hillbillys but somehow made it work.

Songs include Bye, Bye Love, You Don't Know Me and Born to Lose.

But the real pearler on this album is I Can't Stop Loving You. A beautiful torch song which became a Charles standard over his many years in the bidness.

Charles soul credentials aren't lost on this album, despite the title.

Interestingly Charles made the album against the wishes of his label. It paid off for Ray who was strung out throughout this period of time in his life.

DW, what is the text you are posting after each album? Is this the entire writeup as it appears in the book, a portion of it, or your own words?

It's a mix of stuff that I've read and stuff from the book put into my own words.

"The Album" - Jive Bunny and The Mastermixers. :) :)

Now, how many of you are now humming "In The Mood"? ;-)

Having not seen this book, can only guess - do "Hotel California" (Eagles), "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" (Beatles), "The Stranger" (Billy Joel), "Tapestry" (Carole King), "Let It Bleed" (Rolling Sontes), "Bat Out Of Hell" (Meatloaf), "Rumours" (Fleetwood Mac), "Dark Side of The Moon" (Pink Floyd) and "Grace" (Jeff Buckley) all get a run somewhere in there? Wouldn't be a list like this without all these stand bys (which all do play a role of their own in music, without a doubt, but still...)

According to Elvis Costello - YES!
According to Gil Scott-Heron - NO!

You decide!
