AC/DC v Queen

Postby Mr66 » Sun Oct 21, 2007 5:59 pm

Had another of my workplace discussions/debates/fights/nuclear war etc.. during the week.
Which band has had the better career and/or greater influence?
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Its stupid comparing them, it'd be like comparing Frank Sinatra to Alice Cooper.

As far as influences go:

Worldwide - Queen no doubt, helped change the shape of music.
Australia - ACDC - awesome band

As far as career goes, probably ACDC because of their longetivity.

Queen would never be the same after Freddy passing away where ACDC continued to be a force without Bon.

As to the better?

Queen have sold 300 million albums, ACDC have sold 150 million albums.
Question answered right there IMHO.
Queen's record is phenomenal, they've spent something like 27 years in the UK charts which is more than Elvis or the Beatles, in fact its more than anyone else ever.

I love them both as I love a wide variety of music. Non comparable sort of music though.
I actually prefer the Angels to them both but they haven't quite sold that sort of units worldwide.

Wedgie, using your theory (who sold the most) that would put these artists ahead of either Queen or AC/DC, I'd rate 3 or 4 of them as good as Queen or AC/DC, but the rest......
The Beatles
Bing Crosby
Michael Jackson
Elvis Presley
Frank Sinatra
ABBA
Alla Pugacheva (?)
Cliff Richard
Elton John
Led Zeppelin
Madonna

BTW
Queen's biggest selling album, Greatest Hits, 25+ million
AC/DC's biggest selling album, Back in Black, 40+ million

Musically, Queen no doubt. All studied music, and it shows in the arrangements and son structures. AC/DC is raw rock, great to listen to but not overly technical or deep musically. I think more bands would take influence from Queen than AC/DC.
I love 'Food and Stuff'. It's where I buy all of my food. And most of my stuff.

Dunno but it wouldn't be those 3 ... Tough call I know, but I think they've just opted for the 3 most commercially played ... I appreciate that the popularity and longevity of such a band will create divided opinion, but off the top of my head I'd have the following ahead of all of those:

Whole Lotta Rosie
Riff Raff
Jailbreak
Sin City
Hells Boys
FTATR (WSY)
High Voltage
Highway

Queen. AC/DC are terribly repetitive, although it does sound good. Queen is far more versatile. Bon Scott could be replaced...Freddie Mecury was irreplacable. Queen better songs, AC/DC better albums.

Queen.

I agree with you there CP - those three songs do appear to be the most commercially recognisable songs by AC/DC.

True, i've never liked ACDC but even I do have a soft spot for Thunderstruck! Takes me back to my McMahons days!

Nothing wrong with Thunderstruck, or a few others off the Razors Edge album, but none that are top 3 material (imho only).
