Big Day Out Review

Ok, I never went, someone else has to carry the can, with regards to vomiting up a far fetched, yet true story about their antics. Perhaps you slept with every band member at the BDO, or spoke to someone, who once waved at a person who did, at a distance of 300 yards. Perhaps you got turfed out for being a lush at 10 am, & bragged about something entirely different.

I got home and heard all this doof-doof muzic and thought it was my feral neighbours.....so I cranked up the stereo to no.11 (if anyone has seen Spinal Tap they'll know what I mean) and chucked on some good old R&R being Status QUO, Led Zepp and some Kiss. As it turned out, the doof-doofing I heard was from Wayville.....had fun anyway as I hadnt listened to that stuff for yonks.
big day out = BORING

Which one are you? Btw, the best way of getting in to the BDO, is not through the drain system, not by jumping the fence & not by impersonating security. Last year when the BDO was sold out, I went on one my biggest non-weekend benders ever... I arrived very hung-over, & without a ticket. I sat out the front, with the hair of the dog, & quietly drank for an hour. I thought about buying a ticket from a scalper, only at face value. No takers there, I just relaxed, & started thinking outside the square. I'd already promised friends I would be inside soon, & that I would contact them, once in. Needless to say, I got in without a ticket & without fanfare/risk. I'm keeping my method a secret, incase it's required again. Let's just say I walked through the front gates with no hassles whatsoever.... PS I saw some people I knew, who went to the trouble of color-copying back stage passes & laminating them, they failed, others even dressing in yellow tops/black pants. My plan involved no deception at all.

I'll admit it was a spur of the moment thing, I probably only got away with it because I was hungover. Not a guaranteed method of entry, but I'm protecting it, so I can use it again (not that I should ever have to)

I wasn't going to go to the BDO this year. But at work on Friday I managed to get a free ticket!! Managed to get there at the end of Hilltop Hoods. It all sounds so much better when it's free!! But I did enjoy Kings of Leon, Living End and White Stripes.

Now I'm counting down to Easter because I'm off to the 3 day Great Escape festival.

The BDO kinda lost me, when they abandoned their "Play Once" Policy. It's become a rotation of the same bands over the years. To me, the most "ground-breaking" BDO, was the one Metallica headlined. They actually appeared to abandon their "safety first" policy, & for all the pre-BDO bagging Metallica recieved, I reckon they left with everyone who'd previously bagged them, converted (you could not move, even at the back of the oval). Naturally, the logistics don't allow a pure "Play Once" policy, but surely having a 5 year stretch between bands would ensure it's more "exclusive". Originally, the rule was (at least for local bands), you don't play 2 BDO's. I reckon some bands are racking up too many frequent flyer points.

Agreed on the Metallica gig Punky, I possibly enjoyed them TOO much to the point that both this years and last years lineups didn't hold much appeal ... I don't really see a problem with Oz bands playing as often as possible, but think that any imports should be kept to a once every x amount of years basis!

Would be nice to see someone like RHCP or Linkin Park headline next years gig

I know a bloke in the "music promotion" industry, gets bands out here, his last attempt at the Chilli Peppers was fruitless, they wanted $1M+ per show! Ticket prices would have been astronomical.

Good to see that the RHCP are all about the fans then... over-rated.

My refernce to frequent flyer points, was aimed at the O/S bands. Not against Hilltop Hoods backing up (local stage last year, main stage this year).

My first BDO was in '95.
I remember walking in and seeing the first song from the first band on a small stage near the entrace.

They were the "Numbskulls"

The song was "Patawalonga Made Me Chunder"

I thougth it was gold =)

The Metallica show was certainly a highlight,as was The Beastie Boys, however, the BDO was originally about people finding and experiencing new music, and this year it managed to get back to that formula to some extent. Most of us willing to admit the lack of a huge O/S headline act being the reason for not attending.
With ticket sales down on the last two years, expect to see the organisers head back and look hard for a big name to headline.

Which begs the question, who would you like to see here as the main act?

Going by recent success, would the Gorillaz be up to it? It's a tough one, to pick an "up & coming" talent to headline- I'd say those types of bands come along 1 in 20 years. Metallica was an excellent choice. I'd love to see Cradle of Filth added to the line-up (not as headliners), to show a bit more diversity. Rancid need to do another BDO (if only for my benefit), thrown in anything Mike Patton is involved with, Misfits MUST be added (even if it's a shadow of itself), and throw in bands like the Killers, Pixies, Butthole Surfers etc

Would be awsome if blink played again, its been 6 years for them at a bdo. Also into a bit of TurboNegro atm.

All time if they could ever get Rage Against The Machine to reform LOL LOL.

What about Slayer, RHCP or Bloodhound Gang

Oh there are to many bands to name

Wasnt interested in the BDO this year. Not for $110 per ticket.

Best one I ever went to was my first one in 1999. Korn, Soulfly, Marilyn Manson, Ash, The Superjesus (just gotten real big), The Living End (ditto), Deejay Punk Roc, Fatboy Slim, Hole (although I cant stand them), Regurgitator. Now that was a gig. Think it cost $68 too
