Great songs, to you.

Postby Dissident » Fri Sep 07, 2007 12:27 pm

Hey all,

The thought behind this thread is to let everyone know of songs you love. It isn't just a list of "Here is what I listen to when I'm happy/sad" whatever.. it's a more detailed look at a song that means a lot to you. It could be the film clip, the lyric content, the melody, or a combination of the whole lot. Maybe it got you through a tough time in your life, or maybe it reflects your state of mind at a particular moment growing up.

Feel free to post the clip if you can find it on YouTube, the lyrics, and why you love the song. It doesn't matter if it's the slowest ballad in the world, or the heaviest, most metal, punk, fast-faced thing you can find. If it means something to you, let it out.
I love 'Food and Stuff'. It's where I buy all of my food. And most of my stuff.

The Ship Song - Nick Cave

It pretty much was my introduction to the great man. It's when I learned that ballads could be well written, slightly dark and not sappy puppy dog stuff like that found in the charts. It was my introduction to good song writing. It's been there for me so many many times in the last 16 years.

Not pretty enough - Kasey Chambers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adW6DQ_BNss

This song was playing in the delivery theatre when my first daughter was born (sjAbc).
I didn't really hear it at the time, but a day later was sitting at traffic lights, when it came on the
radio. I started crying, as the song played, and thought what the hell ! Made it to the hospital,
told the wife and she said it was one when the daughter popped out !! Everytime I hear it now
I still tear up.....
I'm just thankful that the hospital didn't have Triple J on and were playing Asshole by Denis Leary or something !! :D
The joy of being on the hill drinking beer cannot be understated

Song : Digging the Grave
Artist : Faith No More
Album : King for a Day Fool for a Lifetime
Released : 1995

I'll start with my "pure energy" song. I love Mike Patton, through all his side projects (of which some would argue FNM is) including the weird and wonderful.

Digging the Grave starts and ends with a bang, opening hard and finishing with silence like an unexpected slap in the face. The whole song is pretty much in your face both lyrically and musically which makes one stand up and listen.

This is my car song, well - one of.

Lyrically, the song hides an emotional side with the words talking about a failed relationship, maybe almost married and how the person (most probably mike himself) left with a much better understanding of what they want in life, and in a partner.

The film clip isn't spectacular, but accompanies the song well.

Film Clip

http://youtube.com/watch?v=kmkMRUNK8Q4 (original video)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=c8DVM1Ufwwk (live version)

Lyrics

It would be wrong to ask you why
Because I know what goes inside
Is only half of what comes out
Isnt that what its about ?
To remind us were alive
To remind us were not blind
In that big, black hole
Comfortable

Digging the grave, I got it made

Let something in, or throw something out ?
You left the door open wide
I know you have a reason why
That knot is better left untied
I just went and undid mine
It takes some time
And the shadows so big
It takes the sun out of the day
And the feeling goes away
If you close the door

Comfortable
I love 'Food and Stuff'. It's where I buy all of my food. And most of my stuff.

I have three songs that mean heaps to me
Number One John Lennon's Beautiful Boy.
After my wife and I lost our first born Cooper Bailey. I heard the song and I know John wrote it for his Sean but Mrs. Strawbs and I both thought the song would suit for his Funeral so we used it. I can listen to the song every now and then but not all that often because of the memories it brings up.

Number Two is Roy Orbison's You've Got It.
Jodie and I danced our wedding waltz to this song so we both like the song alot and i usually shuffle when I hear this song.

Number Three Queens I want to break free.
This was my first ever vinyl 45. I still have it in mint condition and I very rarely play it. I love Queen because of this song.
I am the Voice Left From Drinking

Very soppy but...

For instant memories of my first true love

I Will Always Love You...must be the Whitney Houston version.

For my current true and greatest love

Perfect Day...Lou Reed

Probably sacrilegious but I especially like this version that was made for a charity telethon

Powderfinger - These Days.

I hadn't heard this song since a mate's funeral in April.
I saw it live on Friday night at the Across the Great Divide Tour in Mildura.
The first three chords were played, at that point I hadn't even recognised the song but must have subconciously, and tears started streaming from my eyes.
It could be considered a sad song to me - but once I'd got over the initial sadness, it was nice.
I was yet to delete his number from my mobile. Afterwards, I was able to send a final text, say goodbye, thank him for being a mate and delete his number. Small things.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

Amazing how an event can change one's perception of a song ... I used to love Greenday's "Time Of Your Life" until it was a funeral song for a mate who went far far too early - Has had a very different meaning/effect ever since.

Im with ya on this 1 DW. Beautiful song. Another song that hits me hard everytime is Beautiful Boy by John Lennon. Was played at my cousin funeral. Died of Luekemia at 4 years old. Sounds bad but i have to try avoid that song. Kills me to hear it.

Closure is a wonderful thing mate, glad you found some.

"save the last dance for me" was the song used at my Pop's funeral at the start of the year (he was known by all as a keen dancer, his talent certainly skipped me). I still can't listen to it without a few tears. Got a copy of the song, burnt on a disc with the dogs club song as the intro. Intend to give it a right old cranking after the GF this year, results permitting.

That's a wonderful song SMAC. The Drifters - great act. Hope you get to play that disc!

As for my experience Friday night, my mate's wife was in the crowd, somewhere near me. Which made the experience all the more personal.
